Looking at the NFL's 2nd and 3rd Rounds from an ACC Fan's Perspective
The NFL picked up five more ACC players Friday evening, but most importantly Colt McCoy and Jimmy Clausen finally drafted! That was getting hard to watch. I'm not sure I could bear McCoy being asked anymore how felt about not being drafted sooner. The Clausen saga thankfully ended in the middle of the second round as well.
Check out my first round analysis at All About Sports .
Clausen ended up being picked up by the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers are in serious need of a new QB. Matt Moore isn't a guy you build a team around so Clausen will have his shot.
The Cleveland Browns drafted Colt McCoy. The Browns have veteran QB Jake Delhomme. Delhomme led the Carolina Panthers to the playoffs several times. He's not a superstar but he's a quality player that McCoy can learn from. McCoy is not that not tall just a shade over 6-1, but highly accurate. That's sounds a little like Drew Brees. We will see if McCoy turns out that way. It's now on to the ACC players.
CB Chris Cook of Virginia was selected 34th by the Minnesota Vikings. At 6-2 and 212 lbs, he's got the size NFL teams covet in their DBs. Solid player who fell under the radar playing for a bad Virginia team.
DE Jason Worilds is another in a long line of good Virginia Tech edge pass rushers. At 6-1.5 he's probably too small to play DE in the NFL. I expect him to be chasing QBs from the LB position. The Pittsburgh Steelers got Worilds with pick 52 in the second round.
S Morgan Burnett was selected 71st in the third round by the Green Bay Packers. Burnett performed well in pre-draft camps. He's 6-1.5 and 209 lbs. I think he was slightly hurt playing on a Georgia Tech secondary that was decimated by injury last year. He'll be solid pro safety.
With the 95th pick in the third round the New Orleans Saints picked TE Jimmy Graham of the Miami Hurricanes. The Saints' current TE Jeremy Shockey, another Miami product, is getting a little older, and this feels like it will be a need down the road. He played basketball at Miami and at 6-6.5 is a big target. He's a natural athlete with tons of potential. If the Saints are patient, this might turn into a big steal for them.
At number 96 in the third round Wake Forest CB product Brandon Ghee was taken by the Cincinnati Bengals. He has sub 4.4 speed, but is not overly athletic. His strength is his good tackling ability.
I'm surprised RB Jonathan Dwyer of Georgia Tech is still available. At one time he was projected as a top 15 pick. His combine results are killing him, but I still feel he's a solid pro prospect. We will see where he ends up in the upcoming rounds.
