2010 NFL Draft: 32 Thoughts on Who Takes Tim Tebow

Lee JohnsonApr 10, 2010

As we approach the 2010 NFL draft, speculation of where Tim Tebow lands runs rampant. It really is a shame that the guy that is being called the greatest college football player of all time is not more of a top prospect for the National Football League.

He has changed his throwing motion but nothing has done more for Tebow’s draft stock than the desire of the media for this guy to be better than his second to third round draft grade many who are not looking for stories give him.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a Tim Tebow fan. Fandom aside, you have to admit it is a little  crazy how much attention a possible second to third rounder, who may switch positions, is getting.

Looking internally, we have talked more about Tebow than we would like. Most have been in response to stories like how he is invited to the NFL draft when that is usually reserved for top prospects. Stories like mock drafts from mainstream sports sites that have the Saints taking him in the first round.

Projecting Every NFL Team's Starting Lineup 🔮

Thinking about the the Saints taking him in the first round—and the fact that he is talked about too much—we have decided to drop one last Tim Tebow post before the NFL draft. Let’s have a look through the 32 NFL teams and speculate who may have reason to use a high draft pick on Tim Tebow.

Unlike most articles we have seen up to this point, we will not be trying to find a way for a team to use a high pick, but simply look at who might be getting some value.

Let’s have a run through the draft order. The common guess is that Tebow will land in the early half of the second round or possibly the late first.  The Panthers and Bears do not have first round picks so we will start with them in our 32 thoughts on who drafts Tim Tebow.

We would love to have fans from any team chime in on what they would think of their team using an early pick on him.

Chicago Bears

The Bears do not have a pick until the 11th pick in the third round because they already sold their soul for a QB. Given that combo, we have to say that landing in Chicago is very unlikely.

Carolina Panthers

The first pick that comes along for the Panthers is pick 16 in round two. It is no secret that the Panthers not only need depth at QB but may need a starter sooner than later, depending on how the whole Matt Moore thing works out.

The Panthers have big needs at WR and on the defensive line as well. By going Timmy in the second round, the Panthers may be waiting until the third round to grab someone they will use every Sunday. It is intriguing though.

St. Louis Rams

Right now the first overall pick is likely to be used on a QB in Sam Bradford. Given that the Rams must leave this draft with a starting QB it is unlikely they look at Tebow and feel they have to have him leading the franchise. The only way the Rams won’t go with Bradford is if they are positive they can land Jimmy Clausen or Colt McCoy.

Detroit Lions

The Lions have spent a few bucks recently on a QB who looks like he is going to be pretty good. I'm thinking they take a pass.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Like the Lions, the Bucs used a pick last year on a guy they plan to have for a long time. QB isn’t looked at as a major need. Not happening, Captain.

Washington Redskins

Mike Shanahan wants people to think that he still may draft a QB after the trade for Donovan McNabb. They could be. Jason Campbell is on his way out the door and Rex Grossman will man the clipboard. Maybe the Skins take a shot if he falls to the fourth round when they get their second pick.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs are starting Matt Cassel and Brodie Croyle is the guy backing him up. I have to say that this is the first real interesting spot to speculate. Things should look up for Cassel this season, but what if they don’t?

The Chiefs have two second rounders and plenty of needs to fill. It is very risky to say the Chiefs would draft a QB high. To take a shot at one we would guess it wouldn’t be until the third round at the earliest.

Seattle Seahawks

Charlie Whitehurst. Whatever that means. The Seahawks are thought to be in the Jimmy Clausen chase, possibly with the second of two first round picks if he is available. Because of the trade with the Chargers they do not pick again until the 28th (60) pick in the second round.

We are thinking that Tebow is gone by then and that he is a stretch for Seattle without a trade.

Cleveland Browns

Five picks in the top 92. The first team after the Rams that really need a franchise guy now. The Browns have ammunition to make a move and get the QB they want if they decide they want one in this draft. Will Tebow be the guy they want over Colt McCoy…or the Jimmy Clausen that Holmgren says he doesn’t like?

Oakland Raiders

Hmm. It’s the Raiders so he could go here in the first round, right? One day you will hear they desperately need a QB, the next it is JaMarcus Russell’s job. Looking at the second round, I guess it could happen, but it would be a very bad decision.

You have to wonder how many years Al Davis thinks he has left. If any team should be building to win now you would think it was them.

Buffalo Bills

Jim Kelly has said he would recommend Tebow after having dinner with him. The Bills need a QB, NOW! The Bills must address offensive tackle and should go that route if one falls in the first round.

Another possibility is that Jimmy Clausen is taken in the first round. in the second round we could very well see him go to these guys if he is still around.

Jacksonville Jaguars

The first team that was really linked to Timmy during the 2009 season. It is thought that the hometown boy would put fans in the seats. There are a few spots that need addressing on the defense and that is the route they likely go in the first round. The Jaguars do not have a second-round pick so if they are going to make it happen without maneuvering it has to happen at pick No. 10.

Denver Broncos

QB is not looked at as a need position this season in Denver. Kyle Orton is the guy. I know. We don’t think the Broncos will be in the risk playing game with their picks unless they got a sweet deal for Brandon Marshall and felt they had picks to burn.

Miami Dolphins

Another in-state team. The Fins apparently feel they have their guy for the future and a crowded bench at the position. There are too many smart moves to be made to take the chance.

San Francisco 49ers

Although the Niners seem content to move along with Alex Smith, Jimmy Clausen’s name has started to fall to these guys in mock drafts. We think the Niners are more likely to take a QB if there is a great value that falls to them.

That value won’t be Timmy in the first so it would have to be the second. There should be plenty of value at need positions in the second for these guys that they don’t look at Tebow.

New York Giants

The starting job is taken for a while. The Giants usually have the luxury to play around with depth, but they have some positions on defense that should not be ignored.

Tennessee Titans

The Titans are very concerned with the defense and very well should be. No second rounder and no chance.

Pittsburgh Steelers

It has been weird thinking about a QB need here the last couple of weeks, huh? Even if Big Ben didn’t make the season, it appeared the Steelers would go with Dixon and address the same needs as they were looking at before the fiasco.

Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons are another team with a franchise QB and needs on defense. No time to play around.

Houston Texans

Looking at the Texans it’s almost harder to find any other team that would be less likely to take the chance of bypassing glaring needs.

Cincinnati Bengals

Maybe he can be the tight end they need so bad! Joke. One of my pet peeves is the sudden call for a tight end for the Bengals, a team that does not use the TE much. Anyway, it's not going to happen. Not that they couldn’t use someone behind Palmer but not that early.

New England Patriots

You might not hear this often but the Patriots have too many needs to do this. BUT...they do have a monster three picks in the second round. They know they don’t need a QB this second, so quick development isn’t an issue. They could actually address three need positions before taking him if he was still around at pick No. 53.

Green Bay Packers

Nope.

Philadelphia Eagles

No way, they just got rid of McNabb and have Kolb and Vick, right? Let’s ponder this a second. Rumors are going again on Vick still being up for trade. Sure, Andy has said he ain’t going anywhere.

Andy also sat on Chris Mortensen’s training camp tour bus last year and said they were happy with McNabb and Kolb, and had no interest in Vick...only one or two days before Vick joining the team. They have five picks in the top 87.  They could. They shouldn’t, but they could.

Baltimore Ravens

Another team with a fresh franchise QB. There are no complaints on Flacco and they appear to be driven to get him more weapons.

Arizona Cardinals

We are at the point that we are not looking at the second round anymore. The Cardinals would have to use a first rounder here to do it. The early pickup of Derek Anderson in free agency and the praise for Matt Leinart make it very unlikely. Could they be a team to trade back so someone can come up for him? Hmmm.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys are not going to go with Tebow here. Like the Cards, they could be a team to trade back.

San Diego Chargers

The Chargers have more pressing needs at running back and nose tackle, two important spots for what the Chargers do.

New York Jets

Even though they won a lot more games, the Jets are in a similar position as the Lions as far as having a QB and other needs go. Tebow doesn’t fit, so there's no reason for him.

Minnesota Vikings

If Tim Tebow falls this far and the top three QBs are gone, this may make sense. The Vikings have needs and should add depth. They are also possibly a year (or months, who knows) from handing the franchise over to the next QB.

Nobody thinks that the Vikings are content with who they have on the roster. We could see this with the above conditions, but not before Clausen or McCoy.

Indianapolis Colts

The first time that Tim Tebow landed in our mock draft it was with the Colts at the end of the second round. We don’t see it in the first as the offensive line and secondary can use help first.

New Orleans Saints

One of the reasons this article was born was because of a mock draft we had seen this week calling for the Saints to take Tebow in the first round. That's a “mad scientist” move for Sean Payton.  That is trying a little too hard to put him in the first round if you ask us.

Conclusion

The only place we really see for Tim Tebow in the first round, aside from a team trading up to get him, is with the Vikings.  This is only if Jimmy Clausen and Colt McCoy are already off the board.

Teams that could easily move into the late first round to get him if they wanted him are the Browns, Patriots, and Eagles. If they wanted to use a pick on him we think they should see if he falls. But if they want him, they want him, and they have the ammo to do it.

Two other teams we could see using a pick on him in the second round are the Bills and the Raiders.

There you have it. Those are the teams we see that could land Tim Tebow, and our speculation is done. There will be no more mention of Mr. Tebow from us until the draft.

Hit up the poll. Who do you think is most likely to take him of these teams?
