QB Jimmy Clausen Has Good Pro Day | 2010 NFL Draft Projections
It seems to happen every year as we head towards the draft; the media goes into fault finding mode on certain talented players. This year, some in the media seem to feel like they need to find things that are wrong with Jimmy Clausen in an effort to show why he's not Sam Bradford.
Questions of health and leadership have come up as reasons why certain teams won't select this young man and why he will fall.
As a 49ers fan I watched something similar to this back when Alex Smith and Aaron Rodgers were entering the NFL. As the draft came closer it looked likely that Smith would be the top pick overall and that Rodgers would wait for another team.
During the draft Rodgers ended up falling into the later part of the first round, eventually being selected by the Green Bay Packers . On that day, Smith got the glory of being a top pick, but it was Rodgers that was in a better situation for success.
Now Rodgers is one of the best NFL quarterbacks around and there is no doubt which player will have the better career.
While it is unknown what will happen in Clausen and Bradford's careers, it is clear that Bradford is projected to play for the worst team in the NFL. Clausen is now projected to fall down to maybe the Jaguars , Raiders , Bills , or 49ers.
Clausen Fights Back
For all the criticism that Clausen has taken in recent weeks, he fired back on the field at his Pro Day workout. At the workout he completed 57 of his 59 pass attempts all while he's still recovering from toe surgery.
No, Clausen did not throw on the run as he made it clear his toe (played with a turf toe injury last year) was still recovering from injury but he should be ready to go in a month from now.
While some analysts will say that this workout was what they expected from Clausen I believe he needed this performance to silence some of his critics.
Draft Day and Beyond
Fortunately for Clausen there are a decent amount teams in need of a quarterback this year, so Clausen shouldn't fall out of the top 15 picks. Aaron Rodgers was not so lucky, as many teams didn't need a quarterback after the 49ers selected theirs, which is why Aaron fell so far.
Clausen may not be the first quarterback taken this season, but I do believe he will be the best quarterback to come out of this draft. His strong work ethic and his mental understanding of the game should go a long way to making him and his teammates successful at the next level.
As for Bradford, he is talented, but if the Rams offensive line can't gel this season, he could fall to a career of punishment and injury. Let's hope the Rams can give him an opportunity to play well.
