Time to react Pat. Time to get on the horn and go after A.J. Burnett or Erik Bedard. A top of the line starter is now a necessity.
Over the past two days the Brewers have traded for C.C. Sabathia and the Cubs have traded for Rich Harden.
There is little doubt in the mind of us Philadelphians that the Phillies will have little trouble winning the NL East again this year. The Phillies have struggled mightily over the past month and still remain in first place.
Where we do worry is when the playoffs roll around. Just look at the pitchers leading the other teams in the National League:
Cubs: Carlos Zambrano, Rich Harden
Brewers: C.C. Sabathia, Ben Sheets
Diamondbacks: Brandon Webb, Dan Haren
Behind Cole Hamels, who is the Phillies number two pitcher? And don’t say Brett Myers. Last I checked he is a Triple A pitcher.
Philadelphia has been through this before with the Eagles. The Eagles were dominating the NFC East and making annual trips to the NFC Championship Game at the beginning of this decade. In 2004 the Eagles even made it all the way to the Super Bowl
The yearly trips to the playoffs by the Eagles were nice. A return to the post season by the Phillies will also be appreciated. But Philadelphia is starving for a Championship, not playoff appearances.
Though the Eagles didn’t win the Super Bowl in 2004, they did get there. And what got them there was the addition of Terrell Owens, the NFL’s version of an ace.
Mr. Gillick it is time to follow suit and go get an ace to compliment Hamels. We do not need a repeat of last year’s playoff sweep.
