Minnesota Twins Organizational Top 10: Second Base

Andrew KneelandJul 2, 2008

All stats current as of July 2

1. Alexi Casilla, Minnesota Twins

Casilla was brought up this year, and is on track for the longest stint of his career. He is thriving against major league pitching, batting .327/.374/.462 through 42 games. He has made only four errors this year. It is thought that Casilla will be transitioned to shortstop either next year or 2010 because of the emergence of Luke Hughes, a second baseman.

2. Brendan Harris, Minnesota Twins

Harris makes most of his starts at shortstop, but can take over for Casilla at second if need be. He has actually played more of his games at second base than short, largely because Casilla wasn't called up at the start of the season.

3. Nick Punto, Minnesota Twins

While Punto is not the best offensive player in the world, he is a marginal defensive backup. He has played 154 games at second base in his career, only three of them coming this year.

4. Matt Macri, Rochester Red Wings

Macri is listed as a third baseman, but has played almost as many games at second as he has a third. He is batting .258/.333/.435 through 37 games at Triple A. During his stint in the Bigs Macri bat .367/.406/.500 through 14 games.

5. Felix Molina, Rochester Red Wings

Molina was recently promoted to Triple A from New Britain. While with the Rock Cats Molina bat .238/.284/.301 through 54 games. He has only played three games in a Rochester uniform this year.

6. Steven Tolleson, New Britain Rock Cats

Tolleson was promoted to Double A at the end of the 2007 season, and is doing very well through his first 58 games. He is batting .335/.421/.517 and has a fielding percentage of .978 at second base.

7. Steven Singleton, Fort Myers Miracle

Singleton was recently promoted to High A Fort Myers from Beloit. He is batting .271/.345/.354 through 13 games. He has committed two errors, however, which drops his fielding percentage to .960.

8. Yangervis Solarte, Fort Myers Miracle

Solarte is in his second year as a professional baseball player. He was promoted from the Gulf Coast League after last year and has played 30 games for Fort Myers. He is batting .260/.313/.404.

9. Paul Kelly, Beloit Snappers

Kelly is old for this team, but may be called up yet again after this season. He was recently promoted from the Gulf Coast League to Beloit, and has played a total of two games. He is batting .667/.714/.667.

10. Juan Blanco, DSL Twins

Just 19 years old, Blanco has already played 15 games for the DSL Twins. He is batting .313/.346/.354. His fielding percentage is 1.000 at second base.
