7 off Season Moves I Want Done in Cleveland
Before I get down to business I want to rehash this season from a my prospective.
“IT sucked”
Enough with the negativity already. I know its a little early in the year to be talking off season strategy here In browns land. But as a die hard fan since 1989 I feel compelled to speculate about the teams future.
First off addressing the teams needs. I know here in Cleveland that most of the fans dream of drafting that flashy running back or that overrated QB. But the bottom line is this year we need more line men to patch up the right side of the line. I know a lot of people are talking Jimmy Clausen at 7 but I think we can get better value with our first pick. I also realize our run defense was bad again this year but I think our porous offense was to blame for a lot of our defenses short comings.
As it stands there may be a lot of options for the browns to choose from at the 7 spot.
If one of the tier 1 talents falls to us we need to draft them. Weather thats Mathew Berry (db), Ndamukong Suh (DL), Gerald McCoy(DL),or Russel Okung(OL). If none of these guys are there when we pick we should trade down. Trading down is the way to go here. I think we can pick up a 3rd rounder via trade and still draft a top notch lineman. I believe Bryan Bulaga from Iowa is a great fit. This guy is big and will get bigger. He is hard nosed and gives it his all. He is very comparable to young Joe Thomas in many regards. Also there is Anthony Davis(OL) out of Rutgers who will transition to the pros well. Hes big and solid.
As to the second round I think its safe place to take QB I think a lot of people are sleeping on Colt McCoy right now. I swear this has Drew Brees part 2 written all over it. Hes smart and ACURATE throws a modest deep ball and makes few mistakes. A perfect fit for the Browns if they are transitioning to west coast spread offense like Holmgren ran in Seattle. Bottom line the guy can play.
I want to see a few moves go down as well before the draft. I know a lot of you are not going to be happy with what I got to say but B.Q. is not second coming of the messiah and needs to go.
#1 Brady Quinn shopped for a 3rd rounder.
#2 Cut D.A unless he restructures his deal. If he restructures then shop him for a 3rd.
#3 Cribbs shopped for a late first rounder unless he stops crying. Man up already.
#4 Sign Chad Pennington or Matt Hasselbeck. For grooming purposes
#5 Pick up Kevin Walter from Houston hes a solid number 2wr.
#6 Draft OL with our first pick
#7 Draft colt McCoy with our second pick
In closing I want to say I think Mangini does deserve another shot. He held great poise with all the negative things that were happening with team and found a way to win some games. The major thing Mangini did do well is teach the team discipline. The Browns were the 3rd least penalized team this year a vast improvement from last year. I know the team started off wrong but in the end they showed that the system was starting to work. that in itself should be enough to get Mangini one more shot.
