2010 Dynasty Rankings: Top 15 Second Basemen, a First Look

Our dynasty second basemen rankings are similar to the yearly league rankings (click here to view), but only at the top. There is quite a bit of movement, with some younger players seemingly primed to emerge as steady fantasy options.

Let’s see how things currently look:

1. Chase Utley—Philadelphia Phillies
2. Ian Kinsler—Texas Rangers
3. Robinson Cano—New York Yankees
4. Brandon Phillips—Cincinnati Reds
5. Ben Zobrist—Tampa Bay Rays
6. Aaron Hill—Toronto Blue Jays
7. Dustin Pedroia—Boston Red Sox
8. Brian Roberts—Baltimore Orioles
9. Howie Kendrick—Los Angeles Angels
10. Ian Stewart—Colorado Rockies
11. Dan Uggla—Florida Marlins
12. Jose Lopez—Seattle Mariners
13. Rickie Weeks—Milwaukee Brewers
14. Asdrubal Cabrera—Cleveland Indians
15. Scott Sizemore—Detroit Tigers

Thoughts

•Placing Brian Roberts on these rankings is an extremely tough task. At 32 years old, it’s possible that we’ve already seen the best he has to offer, seeing his stolen bases go from 50 in ‘07 to 40 in ‘08 to 30 in ‘09.

While I wouldn’t suggest the trend to continue, going to 20 and 10 in the next two seasons, there certainly is reason to be concerned. For now I’m knocking him down three spots but I’ll certainly be readdressing that moving forward. I wouldn’t anticipate seeing him drop any lower than eight, however, and he could move back up a spot or two.

•I considered moving Pedroia over Hill, something that may follow suit on the yearly rankings, though I need to do more projections on that. There’s a fear that Hill’s breakout performance in 2009 makes him primed for a regression, and it certainly is valid.

He’s never shown the potential to maintain a 14.9 percent HR/FB rate, so the 36 HRs stick out like a sore thumb. If he were to regress into the 25 HR range, Pedroia is going to be more valuable.

•Both Stewart and Kendrick offer risks, but at the point where you’d be grabbing them they are worth it, especially in dynasty leagues. Both offer much better long-term potential over Uggla and Lopez, something they could realize as soon as 2010.

•Sizemore has the potential to be a continual 20/20 threat and appears primed to start the season as Detroit’s second baseman (assuming he can recover from the injury he sustained in the AFL). He certainly has the skills to be a must use player in every format early on in 2010.
