2018 NFL Mock Draft: Updated Predictions for Rounds 2 and 3

Joe TanseyApr 27, 2018

The second day of the NFL draft is when front office personnel make their money.

With the best talent in the draft pool off the board, the task at hand in the second and third rounds is to identify value picks and players who could come in and compete for playing time right away.

Given the nature of Thursday's first round, there are a few players graded as first-round picks who should be taken at the top of the second round.

Colts Should Be Busiest Team On Day 2

The Indianapolis Colts are in an ideal position to bolster their roster, as they have four picks on the second day of the draft.

After selecting Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson with the No. 6 pick they received in the trade with the New York Jets that resulted in Todd Bowles' team taking USC quarterback Sam Darnold at No. 3, the Colts have three second-round selections and a third-rounder at their disposal.

With some projected first-round picks left at the start of the second round, the Colts have an opportunity to improve their defense with Boston College defensive end Harold Landry and Iowa cornerback Josh Jackson.

Indianapolis also holds a selection in the middle of the second round, where it brings in a weapon for quarterback Andrew Luck in the form of Penn State tight end Mike Gesicki.

The Colts appear at the start of the third round, and it wouldn't be a terrible idea to go after a quarterback like Richmond's Kyle Lauletta to develop underneath Luck or become a potential option off the bench if Luck isn't 100 percent healthy.

Although they are in a terrific position to start, the Colts could better their standing in the second round even more if they value a player after the No. 37 pick.

With a third second-round pick and a high third-round selection, Indianapolis could package those or one of its Saturday picks to make a splash.

Expect an Early Run on Offensive Skill Position Players

The first round didn't produce the ideal results for running backs, wide receivers and tight ends, as Maryland wideout D.J. Moore was the first skill position player taken at No. 24.

LSU running back Derrius Guice should be a coveted prospect at the start of the second round, and it would be wise of the Cleveland Browns to add another offensive weapon to their depth chart.

Wide receivers Christian Kirk of Texas A&M, Courtland Sutton of SMU and Anthony Miller of Memphis would be nice value pieces at the start of Day 2 for teams looking to add more talent.

After going with a defensive pick in the first round, the Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos and Miami Dolphins should lean to the other side of the ball, which triggers a run on wide receivers.

Tight end is going to be another intriguing position, with South Dakota State's Dallas Goedert and Penn State's Gesicki being solid options for teams in the second round. Also keep an eye on Oklahoma's Mark Andrews and Miami's Chris Herndon in the third round.

When it comes to the running backs left after Guice, Georgia's Nick Chubb is next in line, but he might experience a drop in the second round because of the amount of wide receivers chosen ahead of him.

USC's Ronald Jones, Auburn's Kerryon Johnson and Oregon's Royce Freeman are all solid options in the second and third rounds for teams looking for a steal or to add depth behind established starters.
