Mike Mayock NFL Mock Draft 2018: Sam Darnold, Saquon Barkley Go No. 1, 2

Joseph ZuckerApr 25, 2018

Many have speculated how the first round of the 2018 NFL draft will unfold Thursday, and NFL Network's Mike Mayock weighed in with his final mock draft Wednesday.

Mayock projected the Cleveland Browns to select USC Trojans quarterback Sam Darnold with the No. 1 overall pick, while he had the New York Giants adding Penn State Nittany Lions running back Saquon Barkley with the second pick.

Here's Mayock's full mock draft:

Most expect the Browns to use the top overall selection on a quarterback, with opinions a little more divided regarding whom Cleveland will ultimately choose. Bleacher Report's Mike Tanier and Doug Farrar were in agreement with Mayock, while Chris Simms had the Browns taking Wyoming Cowboys passer Josh Allen.

The Ringer's Riley McAtee argued Cleveland's final decision would be something of a litmus test for the front office.

The previous regime, which emphasized a more analytical approach, likely would've been swayed by the number of advanced metrics that are less than flattering toward Allen. A more traditional general manager such as John Dorsey might be willing to overlook that, though, in favor of Allen's frame (6'5", 237 lbs.) and overall potential.

That said, Barkley may also be a tempting option for the Browns. After running for 3,843 yards and 43 touchdowns in three years at Penn State, he has the look of a perennial Pro Bowler in the backfield.

As much as Cleveland is starved for a quarterback, taking a running back would make sense for a franchise that has had 13 different leading rushers since 1999.

Mayock had Allen as the third quarterback off the board, with the Buffalo Bills trading up to No. 6 in order to get him. Although the Bills signed AJ McCarron, going with a QB makes sense for Buffalo after the team traded Tyrod Taylor.

Whether or not the Bills ultimately go with Allen, he has already made it clear he'd be ready for the challenge, per NFL Network's Andrew Siciliano:

Somewhat surprisingly, Mayock had UCLA Bruins quarterback Josh Rosen slipping all the way down to the Arizona Cardinals at No. 15. Arizona would almost certainly be thrilled if that comes to pass, with the Cardinals looking for a long-term successor to the retired Carson Palmer.

Bleacher Report's Matt Miller ranked Rosen as the third-best QB in the 2018 draft class, behind Darnold and Allen. Miller compared Rosen to Jared Goff and wrote the Bruins star "is a clean prospect in terms of mechanics but has the biggest question marks when it comes to injury history and coachability."

Rosen's arrival would leave first-year head coach Steven Wilks with a difficult decision as he weighed possibly putting a rookie ahead of Sam Bradford and Mike Glennon in the depth chart.
