Christian McCaffrey Rumored to Have 2017 NFL Draft Guarantee from Unnamed Team
An unnamed NFL team reportedly told Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey it would draft him if he was available, according to Tony Pauline of Draft Analyst.
"The story circulating from insiders is that McCaffrey has received a draft guarantee from a team presently selecting in the teens—the team has guaranteed McCaffrey they will select him if he's still available when they are called to the podium," Pauline wrote.
If such a guarantee was indeed made, it's possible that factored into McCaffrey's decision to decline all private workout requests, as Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported Sunday. It's also possible McCaffrey never planned on participating in private workouts after his pro day, a growing trend among NFL prospects as Florio noted.
Private workouts or not, McCaffrey likely won't be on the board for long at the 2017 NFL draft. Bleacher Report's Matt Miller projected him to go No. 8 to the Carolina Panthers in his latest mock draft, so it's possible the Stanford running back won't even make it out of the top 10.
McCaffrey's versatility makes him particularly compelling, as he's not only an excellent runner but also a fantastic receiver.
"I think he's the best route runner in the draft, and I include all wide receivers, tight ends, H-backs, whatever you wanna pick," NFL Network draft analyst Charles Davis told Joe DeCamara and Jon Ritchie of the 94WIP Midday Show (h/t Andrew Porter of CBS Philly). "... The way he caught the ball in the combine was so scary good.
"I think he's the most complete back in the draft," he added. "The way we run the ball in the NFL now—there are less [fullbacks] running around in front of people that clear the way. And you have to find your own way, so we do it more of a space game. And that's what Christian does as well as anyone in this draft."
