Eagles Win Coin Toss vs. Colts to Pick 14th at 2017 NFL Draft

Tim DanielsMar 3, 2017

The Philadelphia Eagles won a coin toss against the Indianapolis Colts on Friday at the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis to capture the 14th overall pick in the 2017 draft. The Colts will own the 15th selection.

Chris Burke of Sports Illustrated confirmed the flip landed in Philly's favor.

The pick the Eagles received is actually from the Minnesota Vikings as part of the Sam Bradford trade last September. The NFL passed along video of the proceedings:

Although moving up or down one spot may not seem like much on the surface, winning the coin flip does provide Philadelphia with added value. Based on the Pro Football Talk draft chart, the difference is 50 points, which is equivalent to an extra fourth-round pick.

Philly and Indy don't necessarily have the same needs going into the draft, so it's unlikely the sides will step on each other's toes in the middle of Round 1. A possible exception would be if both teams end up looking at a running back, but there's solid depth at that position.

One other thing that could come into play to help the Eagles is a trade.

More specifically, there's a lot of uncertainty at this stage about the quarterbacks. The odds are Mitch Trubisky will be off the board, but there might be interest in Deshaun Watson, DeShone Kizer or Patrick Mahomes starting around the midway point of the first round.

Philadelphia (Carson Wentz) and Indianapolis (Andrew Luck) are both set at the position. But now the Eagles are in a slightly better position to trade down and pick up some additional selections if other teams are in fact looking to move up to grab their QB of choice.

Ultimately, the most likely outcome is both teams staying put and landing the prospect they wanted, regardless of it was at No. 14 or No. 15. But winning the coin toss does give Roseman and Co. a little more bang for their buck from the Bradford deal.
