Teams to Watch
Denver Broncos (50-1)
Right now, the defending Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos are in position to make a postseason appearance. If they can get into the playoffs, they should be considered because of their defense—which obviously paved the way to last year's title.
Pro Football Focus rates Denver first in overall defense for the season so far. As a team, Denver allows just 310.7 yards (third-fewest in the NFL) and 18.6 points (sixth fewest) per game.
The problem for this year's Denver team is the offense, especially early in games. The Broncos are currently rated 26th in overall offense by Pro Football Focus and average just 328.1 yards per game (25th in the NFL).
As good as the Denver defense is, it isn't quite built to help overcome an early deficit. Teams have been able to run on the unit this year. In fact, only three teams allow more rushing yards than the 127.2 per game Denver allows. This clearly aids the opposition when they can play with a lead.
Unfortunately, the Broncos have given the opposition an early lead far too often this season.
In addition to an inconsistent offense and a flawed run defense, the Broncos are facing a daunting remaining schedule. Denver finish the year against New England, Kansas City and the Oakland Raiders—teams with a combined record of 31-8.
Denver may have won the big game in 2015, but there's a very real chance the Broncos don't even see the postseason this year.
Green Bay Packers (16-1)

The Green Bay Packers appeared dead in the proverbial water only a few short weeks ago. However, the Packers have won three straight games in dominant fashion—a combined 86-36 score—and are in position to make a run.
It's actually sort of amazing to see just how Green Bay has rebounded from the team's early-season struggles.
“The negativity—frankly, I think it’s a good thing to have, because you can grow,” Packers head coach Mike McCarthy explained, per Tom Pelissero of USA Today. “Whether you like it or not, the negatives that are said about you, you have to look at them and identify them as perception or opinion or agenda-driven opinion [or] reality."
There is a shot the Packers can still steal the NFC North away from the rival Detroit Lions. The Packers close out the year against the Chicago Bears, the Minnesota Vikings and then Detroit. Green Bay will have to win out to have a chance at the division crown, though, and the immediate challenge is tough.
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is dealing with a calf injury and will have to fight through Chicago temperatures far below freezing.
If the Packers can get past Chicago and then Minnesota, they'll have a shot to take the division from Detroit in the finale. This is assuming the Lions lose one of their next two games, at the New York Giants and at the Dallas Cowboys.
If Green Bay can continue playing the way the team has over the past three weeks, the Packers can potentially slip into the postseason and make a run. Pro Football Focus rates Green Bay as the fifth-best overall team in the league. The Vegas odds-makers have clearly recognized this, as the Packers have better Super Bowl odds than the division-leading Lions.
Pittsburgh Steelers (9-1)
Like the Packers, the Pittsburgh Steelers have managed to go on a recent run—four wins in a row, to be specific. Pittsburgh has now taken over the AFC North and has one of the easier remaining schedules of any team.
Also like the Packers, Pittsburgh finishes the year against their three divisional foes. This week brings a grudge match with the hated Cincinnati Bengals. Next week's matchup with the Baltimore Ravens could essentially decide the division as the Ravens have already won a head-to-head battle. The Steelers then finish with the woeful Cleveland Browns.
While the Ravens and Bengals could certainly provide challenges to the Steelers, these three foes have a combined record of just 12-26-1.
The Steelers don't have a strong chance of earning a first-round bye, but they can still be dangerous once playoff football begins. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger leads an offense loaded with weapons like Antonio Brown, Le'Veon Bell and Ladarius Green.
Pittsburgh's defense, while sometimes inconsistent, has improved through the season. It is now rated 17th overall by Pro Football Focus for the year. Pittsburgh has the firepower to match scores with any team, and a couple of key defensive stops could get the Steelers past even the best postseason opponents.
In addition, it's worth noting the postseason experience this team has. This is likely the X-factor that has prompted the odds-makers to give the Steelers the fourth-best odds of any team right now.
