Michael Floyd Cut by Cardinals: Latest Comments and Reaction

Timothy RappDec 14, 2016

The Arizona Cardinals have released wide receiver Michael Floyd, according to Darren Urban of the team's official website.

Urban reported Wednesday that a DUI charge Monday morning "spurred his release" while also noting Floyd's drops this season and decrease in production—he's caught just 33 passes for 446 yards and four touchdowns and has fallen down the pecking order at wide receiver—were likely factors in the decision.

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com also suspected Floyd's off-field conduct was a factor in the decision:

Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill called the decision "very difficult," "deeply disappointing" and "unanimous," according to Rapoport.

Bill Barnwell of ESPN.com saw the move differently, however:

Head coach Bruce Arians noted he, general manager Steve Keim and team president Michael Bidwill all agreed on the decision to cut Floyd, per Urban.

Arians didn't have much to say beyond that, however:

Quarterback Carson Palmer, meanwhile, was sorry to see Floyd go, according to Kent Somers of AZCentral.com:

For teams interested in signing Floyd after his release, Field Yates of ESPN.com reported a team that claims Floyd off waivers Thursday would be on the hook for the $861,176 he is owed for the rest of the season. But given that Floyd is owed that amount of money and is set to become a free agent next year, anyway—with a DUI charge hanging over his head—it wouldn't be a surprise if no team wants to take on that financial burden.

As for the Cardinals, the team is still strong at wide receiver, led by Larry Fitzgerald, J.J. Nelson and John Brown.
