Chris Maragos, Eagles Agree to New Contract: Details, Comments and Reaction
The Philadelphia Eagles announced on Thursday that they signed safety Chris Maragos to a three-year contract extension through the 2019 season.
Executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman talked about the signing in a statement, per Derek Boyko of the team's public relations department:
"From the first day he set foot in the city of Philadelphia in 2014, Chris Maragos has represented our organization at the highest level on and off the field. His work ethic, team-first attitude, accountability and high character are things he brings to work every single day. And he happens to be one of the best special teams players in the NFL and we're excited to be able to extend his contract.
"
Zach Berman of the Philadelphia Inquirer backed up Roseman's assertion of Maragos' excellent special teams play, noting that Maragos has played in 80 percent of Philadelphia's special teams snaps and led the Eagles with 30 special teams tackles between the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
As good as Maragos has been for the Eagles, his stint in Philadelphia also altered his career trajectory, as Berman added:
This season, Maragos, 29, has accumulated six tackles and is tied for first on the team in special teams tackles, according to Jimmy Kempski of Philly Voice.
With Maragos set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season, the Eagles decided against letting him hit the open market. Given that Maragos has been a standout on a special teams unit that continues to be one of the best in the NFL, the decision was hardly surprising.
