Roddy White Tweets About Interaction with Police Officer During Traffic Stop
Former Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White revealed his intention to report a Dekalb County, Georgia, police officer Wednesday following a traffic stop.
In a series of tweets, White described an encounter he had after being pulled over for speeding and having an expired tag [sic]:
"This officer got out his car and immediately unbutton his his strap on his gun and put his hand on his gun and came to my car wit his hand on his gun like I was going to do something to him, so I asked him why he had his hand on his gun. The man said it was police procedure, so I said, "Really?" and he said, "No, it's my procedure." I than asked him, "Why do you think I want to hurt you?" and he had no response. I than said, "It's cops like you that makes this world a very ugly place." It's a good thing I already had all my information to give him or I could've died on a routine traffic stop cause if u stopping me for speeding, I don't see a reason to grab your gun.
"
White concluded by tweeting he would report the officer to "save the next black man's life."
The four-time Pro Bowler's experience came four months after the well-publicized shooting deaths of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling. Castile's occurred during a traffic stop.
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick brought protest against racial injustice and police brutality to the forefront of the NFL in August when he first decided to sit and then kneel during the playing of the national anthem.
Kaepernick was outspoken in the aftermath of the deaths, as he connected them to racism in America in Instagram posts.
Several other NFL players have joined Kaepernick in protesting during the anthem by sitting, kneeling or raising a fist.
The 35-year-old White is no longer in the league after the Falcons released him during the offseason, but his run-in is one that promises to hit close to home for his former peers.
