Mike Tomlin Comments on Chris Boswell's Onside Kick Attempt vs. Ravens

Joseph ZuckerNov 8, 2016

Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Chris Boswell's failed onside kick went viral for the wrong reasons in his team's 21-14 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, but that wouldn't dissuade Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin from letting Boswell try it again.

"We felt comfortable about allowing him to deliver that kick based on what we've seen him do here in practice-like settings," Tomlin said, according to ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler. "Would I give him the opportunity again? I would, based on what I've seen in preparation."

Hoping to catch the Ravens off guard, Boswell tried a rabona, and needless to say, it failed miserably. The NFL UK Twitter account shared a replay:

The 25-year-old was on the receiving end of various jokes on social media in the ensuing days, and even the German Bundesliga piled on:

As bad as Boswell's attempt was, there's no reason for him not to try it again. In addition to pulling off the kick during practice, he executed the plan to perfection in college for the Rice Owls in 2013.

The onside kick boasts a low enough success rate as is. Of the 1,009 onside kicks from 2000 to 2016, 157 were recovered by the kicking team, according to Pro-Football-Reference.com. Using a rabona could tilt the odds slightly in the kicking team's favor since the receiving team won't be expecting it.

If Boswell gets another crack at the onside kick, at least he'll have the comfort of knowing things can't go much worse than they did in Week 9.
