NFL Trade Deadline 2016: Twitter Reacts to Trades, Fails, Surprises, Non-Deals
The 2016 NFL trade deadline officially passed Tuesday afternoon, and all of the biggest trade chips stayed put.
The Cleveland Browns announced Monday they acquired linebacker Jamie Collins from the New England Patriots for a conditional draft pick. The Detroit Lions also confirmed Tuesday they finalized a trade for cornerback Johnthan Banks with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
While many teams remained inactive on deadline day, Sports Illustrated's Chris Burke was hard at work:
Niners Nation was underwhelmed by the lack of action:
A few marquee names bounced around the rumor mill before ultimately going nowhere.
Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio spoke to a source who described the New York Jets as "actively shopping" defensive end Sheldon Richardson.
While Richardson remains a member of the Jets, ESPN.com's Rich Cimini doesn't see the trade speculation ending in the offseason:
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Torrey Smith and offensive tackle Joe Staley were the subject of trade talks over the past few days. NFL Media's Ian Rapoport (via Chris Wesseling of NFL.com) reported the Philadelphia Eagles had shown interest in Smith, while the Niners were looking to get a first-round pick back for Staley, according to Florio.
The Bay Area News Group's Cam Inman reported Smith and Staley were at practice Tuesday, essentially signalling they wouldn't be going anywhere.
Bleeding Green Nation's Adam Hermann wished the Eagles would've done something to upgrade at wideout:
Florio speculated Monday the market for Cleveland Browns offensive tackle Joe Thomas was shrinking—with the New York Giants the only possibility.
Trading Thomas would've been somewhat awkward for Cleveland after the nine-time Pro Bowler joined some of his teammates in meeting with military servicemen and servicewomen, courtesy of Andrew Gribble of the Browns' official site:
According to Rapoport, the Browns were, however, dangling cornerbacks Joe Haden and Tramon Williams. Football Outsiders' Cian Fahey was less than impressed with the cornerbacks available on deadline day:
"Johnthan Banks, Tramon Williams and Joe Haden up for trade? Titans may as well offer up Antwon Blake.
— Cian Fahey (@Cianaf) November 1, 2016"
In general, The MMQB's Andrew Brandt, who spent years in NFL front offices, wasn't surprised by the lack of a blockbuster trade Tuesday:
While the MLB and NBA trade deadlines are often littered with various deals, midseason trades in the NFL are rare, especially on deadline day.
The Indianapolis Colts' ill-fated trade for running back Trent Richardson in 2013 is one of the most recent notable trades executed in the middle of the year. If anything, the move serves as a cautionary tale after the Colts gave up a first-round pick to have Richardson average 3.1 yards a carry over 15 games before the team released him in March 2015.
NFL teams can still look to free agency to upgrade their rosters, though ESPN.com's Field Yates noted any players released from this point on will have to pass through waivers before finding new homes.
Fans hoping to see landscape-changing deals will likely have to wait until the offseason.
