Taylor Mays Reportedly Spent Time at Treatment Facility During Suspension
Free-agent safety Taylor Mays reportedly spent time in a treatment facility after twice violating the NFL's substance abuse policy during the offseason.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Mays spent "several weeks" in the facility and is eligible to be reinstated by the NFL on Monday.
Mays was suspended for the first four games of the 2016 NFL regular season for a violation in March and an additional four games for another violation.
The Cincinnati Bengals signed Mays during the offseason, but they released him when it became clear he would miss eight games.
Mays was a second-round draft pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 2010 out of USC, and he has since played for both the Bengals and the Oakland Raiders.
He has 107 career tackles with 11 passes defended, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and no interceptions to his credit in six NFL seasons.
The 28-year-old veteran is at his best in run support and has been used as a hybrid safety and linebacker at times during his career.
Depth tends to become an issue for teams at this juncture of the season, so if Mays' off-field issues are officially behind him, he could become a viable veteran addition for a team in need of secondary help in the coming weeks.
