NFL Rumors: Top Trade Buzz Surrounding Joe Thomas, Torrey Smith and More
With the Nov. 1 NFL trade deadline approaching, several big names from the league's bottom-feeders have emerged as potential chips and targets for teams that are hoping to make deep playoff runs.
Although in-season trades are somewhat rare in the NFL, teams like the Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers already have little left to play for, so it isn't outside the realm of possibility that they could trade one of their franchise guys in favor of acquiring future assets.
As trade chatter and speculation continues to mount, here is a look at some of the top names rumored to be available in possible deals.
Joe Thomas
Browns offensive tackle Joe Thomas has been the subject of trade talks for the past few seasons, and with Cleveland remaining as the NFL's only winless team, it comes as little surprise that his name is caught up in the rumor mill once again.
According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, a source indicated the Browns are open to trading the nine-time Pro Bowler. The Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals, New York Giants and Seattle Seahawks have all shown interest, and the Browns are reportedly asking for a second-round pick in return for the 2007 No. 3 overall selection.
Despite Thomas' rumor availability, Browns head coach Hue Jackson made it clear Monday that the organization is not looking to move the 31-year-old veteran, per Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com: "We are not going to trade [Thomas]. ... [Thomas] has a lot to do with what we are trying to accomplish here in our future. There are a lot of reports, but that is what they are."
While Jackson was matter of fact in his assertion, the price teams are willing to pay for Thomas could potentially go up as the deadline draws closer and teams get more desperate.
Several quality teams have major offensive line issues. The Vikings are a prime example due to injuries to starting tackles Matt Kalil and Andre Smith. Also, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson was constantly under fire against the Cardinals, which could conceivably cause them to up the ante.
Thomas has been one of the NFL's premier left tackles since entering the league, as evidenced by his six career All-Pro selections.
He is a likely future Hall of Famer and the face of the franchise in Cleveland, which is likely why the Browns may have some pause when it comes to trading him.
There have been no signs that Cleveland is anywhere close to being ready to contend in the near future, though, which is why maximizing Thomas' value while he is still in his prime may be the best move for the organization moving forward.
Wide receiver Torrey Smith's production has dropped off significantly since leaving the Baltimore Ravens in favor of the San Francisco 49ers, and he has emerged as a potential buy-low candidate on the trade market.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Niners are open to trading Smith and multiple teams have shown interest in acquiring his services.
Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com reported that another source indicated there is no trade on the horizon involving Smith, however.
That was in direct conflict with a Pro Football Talk report that brought rumored trade negotiations between the 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles involving Smith to light.
The Eagles are currently 4-2, but their receiver corps is an issue, as neither Nelson Agholor nor Dorial Green-Beckham have emerged as consistent targets for rookie quarterback Carson Wentz behind No. 1 pass-catcher Jordan Matthews.
Smith is the type of player who could potentially open up an offense due to his ability to make plays down the field. He has a career yards-per-catch average of 17.2 and just reeled in a 53-yard touchdown two weeks ago:
Despite that score, Smith is struggling to the tune of 13 catches for 199 yards and two touchdowns this season. That comes after he set career lows in 2015 with 33 receptions for 663 yards and four scores.
Smith was far more effective during his four seasons in Baltimore as he racked up 30 receiving touchdowns in that time and even registered a 1,000-yard season in 2013.
The 27-year-old has lost his way in San Francisco, but that may have more to do with an awful quarterback situation involving Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert than his own skills.
Smith is a field-stretcher with the ability to keep opposing offenses honest, so a contending team such as the Eagles, who lack that dimension, would be wise to explore the possibility of bringing Smith aboard, especially if his struggles make him a buy-low player.
Joe Staley
With the Niners struggling to the tune of just one win this season, Smith isn't the only one rumored to be on the move, as offensive tackle Joe Staley's name has also come up in rumors.
According to Florio, the Vikings, Giants, Cardinals and Seahawks are interested in Staley much like Thomas, but San Francisco is hoping to score a late first-round pick in return.
Head coach Chip Kelly is unaware of any plans to deal the 32-year-old veteran, though, per Cam Inman of Bay Area News Group:
Staley has developed into one of the NFL's best and most reliable offensive tackles in recent years, and he hasn't missed a game due to injury since 2010.
San Francisco has lost a lot of talent over the past few seasons, and most of the players from its Super Bowl team are gone, but Staley is among the few constants left standing.
As great as Staley is, he is being wasted with the 49ers to some degree since the quarterback situation is a mess and due to the fact that talented running back Carlos Hyde is constantly on the injured list.
Staley could be a key addition to a team that has a chance to do some damage in the playoffs, and while the rumored price to land him is fairly high, he is the type of player who can change the entire makeup of an offensive line due to his dominance.
