Giants vs. Rams: Score and Twitter Reaction from 2016 Regular Season

Timothy RappOct 23, 2016

New York Giants safety Landon Collins put on a show Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams at Twickenham Stadium in London.

Collins made two crucial interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown, as the Giants defeated the Rams 17-10. Cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie also intercepted two passes. In addition to the four takeaways, New York sacked Los Angeles quarterback Case Keenum three times.

Entering the game, the Giants had forced just three turnovers this season.

Keenum completed 32 of 53 passes for 291 yards and a touchdown, but his four interceptions were the difference. Todd Gurley accumulated 92 yards from scrimmage for the Rams, while Tavon Austin added 10 receptions for 57 yards and a score, and Brian Quick caught four passes for 92 yards.

New York quarterback Eli Manning finished 24-of-37 for 196 yards. Victor Cruz had five receptions for 55 yards, and Odell Beckham Jr. caught five passes for 49 yards. The Giants managed just 232 yards of offense, but the defense did enough to help them earn a win.

Things couldn't have started much worse for New York, however.

Larry Donnell fumbled on the team's second play from scrimmage, setting up Los Angeles with the ball at the Giants' 35-yard line. Seven plays later, Keenum found Austin from 10 yards out.

NFL Network shared video of the score:

If they could have, the Giants likely would've taken a mulligan after such a disastrous start, as Rich Eisen of NFL Network detailed:

New York's slow start continued when it punted after just four plays on the ensuing drive. The Rams again answered, going on an eight-play, 62-yard drive that culminated in a 36-yard field goal by Greg Zuerlein.

It was a rough first quarter for the Giants, per Raymond Summerlin of Rotoworld:

New York awoke from its slumber on its first drive of the second quarter, however, marching 71 yards in 14 plays. Robbie Gould hit a 29-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 10-3.

On the next drive, a deflected Keenum pass ended up in the hands of Collins, who weaved his way through the Los Angeles offense and took the ball to the house:

That helped tie the game, 10-10.

Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk was impressed with Collins' effort on the play:

It was another excellent moment for Collins in what has been a strong 2016 campaign, as Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com noted:

The teams were tied at 10 at halftime and traded a series of punts throughout an uneventful third quarter. But less than three minutes into the fourth quarter, Keenum once again had a deflected pass land in the hands of Collins, setting the Giants up at the Rams' 35-yard line.

Beckham made a huge catch on 3rd-and-3 from the 28 to push the ball to the 6-yard line, via NFL Network:

Three plays later, Rashad Jennings crashed into the end zone from one yard out to help the Giants to a 17-10 advantage.

Los Angeles reached New York's 37-yard line on its next drive, but Keenum threw an ill-advised pass toward Austin in the end zone. Rodgers-Cromartie was in perfect position to make the interception, and the Giants defense again held stout, via the NFL:

Mark Maske of the Washington Post wasn't impressed by the throw or the team's insistence to keep rookie quarterback Jared Goff on the bench:

Bill Barnwell of ESPN.com was equally critical of the throw:

The Rams forced a three-and-out on the subsequent series and got the ball back on their 25-yard line with 3:03 remaining. Keenum drove Los Angeles to New York's 15 with a minute remaining, but he miscommunicated with Quick while adjusting against a blitz, and Rodgers-Cromartie easily intercepted a floating fade into the end zone.

The Giants (4-3) are off next week before they face the division rival Philadelphia Eagles in Week 9. The Rams (3-4) are also entering their bye week and will take on the struggling Carolina Panthers on Nov. 6.

Rams head coach Jeff Fisher said he won't make a change at quarterback, per Rosenthal.

"I'll make changes at receiver before I make a change at QB," Fisher added.

Ben Volin of the Boston Globe speculated on the reason behind that decision:

Bleacher Report's Mike Freeman was less inclined to offer Fisher the benefit of the doubt:

"I thought it was a gutsy win," Giants head coach Ben McAdoo said, according to the team.

"[Takeaways] usually come in bunches," the first-year head coach also noted. "Today was the day."

"We just keep fighting and fighting, so that says a lot about us as a team," Rodgers-Cromartie said. "We're a resilient group."

On Friday, New York kicker Josh Brown was placed on the commissioner's exempt list after details emerged about his history of domestic abuse. The Giants re-signed Brown to a two-year deal in April, and he was suspended for the first game of the season in August.

McAdoo addressed the situation with reporters after the game, per James Kratch of NJ Advance Media:

Though the Giants won't play again until Nov. 6, how the organization and the league office handle the Brown situation—both have been widely criticized for their approach—will continue to be a major storyline.
