Darrelle Revis Criticizes Officials After Week 6 Loss vs. Cardinals
New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis called the officiating in Monday's 28-3 loss to the Arizona Cardinals into question Thursday, citing penalties against members of the secondary.
"I think some of the calls were definitely questionable," Revis said, per Darryl Slater of NJ.com. "Definitely questionable. At the same time, I don't know. We still have to play the game. I don't know what the refs are paying attention to, or are keying or watching. Definitely, there were some calls that were questionable."
The Jets were called for 14 penalties Monday night, 10 of which the Cardinals accepted. Six of the called penalties went against the secondary.
Only one of the calls went against Revis, but fellow starter Buster Skrine was flagged for three defensive holding infractions and one pass-interference penalty. (The Cardinals declined two of the calls against Skrine.)
"The rules have changed," Revis said, per Slater. "The DPI, pass-interference rules have changed since I've been here—a few times. The only thing you can do is try to adjust and do what you can, and just cover the best way you can. The game Monday night, those penalties, they did rack up on us. That did kill us."
It's unlikely that those calls made any tangible difference in the outcome. The Cardinals dominated from start to finish, racking up nearly 400 yards of total offense and forcing a pair of turnovers. The anemic Jets mustered only a second-quarter field goal and 33 rushing yards.
With that level of performance, there is almost no scenario in which the 1-5 Jets could have made it a competitive game. The penalties made their defensive performance look worse, but that's likely immaterial to the result.
Revis' complaints may have more to do with the fact that he's in the midst of his worst professional season than anything. The perennial Pro Bowler ranks 103rd among cornerbacks in Pro Football Focus' grading system. He has yet to record an interception or pass defensed, and opposing quarterbacks have had no issue with targeting his side of the field.
His regression has played a large role in the struggles of New York's pass defense, which ranks last in the NFL, according to Football Outsiders. With Skrine racking up penalties and Revis Island becoming a vacation resort, there is little reason to feel intimidated playing against head coach Todd Bowles' defense.
