Week 7 Waiver Wire: Jay Ajayi, Colin Kaepernick Highlight Pickups to Know

Chris RolingOct 17, 2016

A sense of balance comes to the Week 7 fantasy football waiver wire.

Week 6 was all about the wide receivers, with injuries and breakout stars emerging for offenses. A similar story rests below, but it's spread out more evenly across positions.

With quarterbacks earning jobs, offenses discovering weapons and injuries changing the complexion of lineups, owners in need at a certain spot shouldn't have a difficult time finding relief.

Whether in need of short- or long-term options, the Week 7 wire provides interesting options to help reinforce rosters that are already well-crafted.

Colin Kaepernick, QB, SF (8.5 percent)

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick won't blow many away with his 17 points in Week 6, but his season debut has made it clear he stands as a strong streaming option for those in need.

Kaepernick hit the road and took on a strong Buffalo Bills defense, flashing signs of the versatility fantasy owners covet by throwing for 187 yards and a score and rushing for 66 more on eight carries.

Again, not the most impressive numbers. It's important to keep in mind that it was Kaepernick's first start of the season, though. Said start was good enough to let him keep the starting gig, which is nothing but good news considering iffy defenses put out by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints rest on the schedule next.

If Kaepernick can hit a groove as starter, the respectable 17 could wind up as 20 or more for a few consecutive weeks before the schedule gets tough again.

Jay Ajayi, RB, MIA (42.4 percent)

So much for Arian Foster

One can tell by his ownership percentage that owners have liked Miami Dolphins back Jay Ajayi enough to keep him in mind. The problem was usage and production, or the number would already sit much higher.

It's time for owners to invest.

In Week 6 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Miami got Foster back...and gave Ajayi 25 carries to his three. The Boise State product finished as the second-highest scorer at his position before Monday at 32 points after he turned the 25 totes into 204 yards and two scores.

The last score was arguably the best, at least for the small percentage of people who likely trotted him out as starter:

There is zero reason for the Dolphins to work Foster into the backfield more. Ajayi won't keep posting such epic numbers, but the coaching staff will understand it is critical to keep feeding a hot back—not to mention that it is necessary to preserve Foster with how fragile he has been over the years.

Look for Ajayi to act like a workhorse for at least the next few weeks. Miami has sought balance and finally found it. Those seeking a starter have it, too.

Kenny Britt, WR, LA (13.1 percent)

Like Ajayi, Los Angeles Rams wideout Kenny Britt finished as the second-highest scorer at his position before Monday.

Go figure, right?

An unscientific poll of fans not in the Los Angeles area—actually, go ahead and include them, too—probably would have found that most didn't even know Britt was still in the league.

Whoops. Britt has been a steady contributor all season long, so this outburst wasn't too difficult to see coming. He's caught four or more passes in every game this year and recorded 67 or more yards in five of six.

Britt finally scored in Week 6, grabbing seven passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns, good for 25 points. As the team captured, his hands couldn't make a mistake:

Los Angeles isn't the most appealing fantasy place right now. But the surprising steadiness of Britt's usage hinted at a huge game against a bad defense.

The same rule still applies after the outburst. Britt isn't done with bad defenses yet, either, not with games against the New York Giants, Carolina Panthers and New York Jets on the slate over the course of the next month.

Vernon Davis, TE, WAS (11.7 percent)

Vernon Davis returns to the realm of fantasy relevancy.

Washington Redskins tight end Vernon Davis got a start in Week 6 against the Philadelphia Eagles, thanks to an injury suffered by starter Jordan Reed.

While he only caught two passes, Davis made the most of the opportunity by turning it into 50 yards and a score, good for 11 points.

The starting gig in Washington belongs to Reed, but Davis is a great add considering the starter has yet to play in a full 16-game season over his four-year career. He's only played in nine, 11 and 14 games before this season. Yet another concussion issue will have him on the sidelines for an unknown stretch.

For those who forgot, Davis is a guy with 13 touchdowns in a season twice over his career that started in 2006. With trust established in the offense, the proven contributor can provide a nice floor for owners in need for as long as he stays in the lineup.
