Brett Favre Comments on Tony Romo and Dak Prescott

Joseph ZuckerOct 11, 2016

Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre weighed in Tuesday on the ongoing discussion as to whether the Dallas Cowboys should start Tony Romo or Dak Prescott should Romo be healthy enough to return.

"No disrespect to [Romo], but maybe he should wait to return if or when [Prescott] struggles," Favre said on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Favre also praised Prescott's performance this year, according to SiriusXM NFL Radio: "The poise and the accuracy he has shown is incredible. I'm extremely impressed in the way he has played."

On Thursday, Stephen A. Smith of ESPN criticized Favre for his comments, via First Take:

Before the 2016 season started, it seemed implausible Romo would have much competition for Dallas' starting QB job when he returns from a fractured vertebra.

However, Prescott has far exceeded expectations under center for the Cowboys. He has thrown for 1,239 yards and four touchdowns and run for 61 yards and three touchdowns in five games. Pro Football Focus grades Prescott as the seventh-best QB (83.8), while Football Outsiders ranked him third in DYAR (defense-adjusted yards above replacement) through Week 4.

On Monday, Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reported the Cowboys still plan to start Romo when he has healed but added confidence in Prescott's abilities is growing:

Matt Mosley of the Dallas Morning News wrote Monday that team owner Jerry Jones may be leaning toward sticking with Prescott:

"

He knows what other folks in the organization are already whispering: This is Prescott's team. If Jason Garrett attempts to reinsert Romo against the Eagles later this month, he might have a mutiny on his hands. One prominent member of the organization has already told me this will be a "big dilemma," as I reported in Texas Monthly last week.

Prescott's numbers are remarkable, but it's his growing stature in this locker room that will make it impossible to bench him. I know there's a theory that Romo will eventually get hurt anyway, but that's the wrong way to frame this. You can't remove one of the hottest quarterbacks in the league out of a sense of loyalty or financial commitment to Romo.

"

The longer Romo remains out, the more difficult it will be for the Cowboys to reinsert him as the starting quarterback. While Romo has a far larger NFL track record than Prescott, switching quarterbacks in the back half of the season could cause unnecessary problems for the offense.

With Dallas looking like a playoff contender, head coach Jason Garrett shouldn't mess with a strategy that is paying off.

On Tuesday, Jones called the team's QB situation "a miracle problem to have," according to the Dallas Morning News' Jon Machota. It could turn into a major headache should Garrett be forced to choose between Romo and Prescott at a critical juncture of the campaign.
