Matt Ryan Throws for Franchise Record 503 Yards

Bleacher Report MilestonesOct 4, 2016

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan threw for 503 yards in the team's 48-33 victory over the Carolina Panthers, setting a franchise record and posting just the 19th 500-yard passing game in NFL history, per ESPN Stats & Info.

His day was aided by the 300-yard receiving effort from teammate Julio Jones, but Ryan was able to distribute over 200 yards to his other offensive targets as well. The contest moved the Falcons to 3-1 on the season, two games ahead of each of their three division foes.

Ryan's start to the 2016 season has played a large role in the team's early success, having posted a 91 QBR, 9.5 yards per dropback and a massively improved TD:INT ratio over the previous three seasons, per ESPN Stats & Info. In terms of the traditional passer rating measure, Ryan's first four games place him nearly 35 points over his career average.

The 31-year-old quarterback has been subject to criticism in the past for his play, and justifiably so sometimes. Ryan finished in the bottom half among starting quarterbacks last season in passer rating and has finished with a sub-90 rating in four of his first eight seasons.

It's difficult seeing Ryan continuing his current pace throughout the rest of the season, especially considering some of the bad defenses Atlanta has already faced. The upcoming two-game stretch will certainly test him, with games in Denver and Seattle on deck for the NFC South division leaders.

The team's defense has also struggled through the first four games, allowing at least 24 points in each contest and more than 30 twice. This could certainly become problematic against teams that have defenses capable of stalling the Falcons' offense (such as Denver and Seattle).

The Falcons have put themselves in good position with a 2-1 record through three division games, but will likely need consistent play from "Matty Ice" the rest of the way, along with some improved defensive play if they want to sniff the playoffs in 2016.
