Richard Sherman Comments on Players' Relationship with NFL
In a video posted on the Players' Tribune on Thursday, Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman explained the players' perspective of how the NFL views and treats them.
Video of Sherman's interview—in which the three-time Pro Bowler discusses a lack of trust between the two sides—was tweeted by the Players' Tribune Twitter account:
In Sherman's opinion, the NFL is worried about its bottom line and how much money the players can make for it above all else:
"We really don't have a reason to trust the NFL, and I don't think they mind either way. At the end of the day, they're going to do what they have to do to make their money and to make as much money as they can for the owners, and our union's going to protect the interests of the players and the rights of the players and help them make as much money as possible. That's the way it's always going to be.
"
He also believes the NFL tends to turn its back on players once their careers are over regardless of the ailments they may have picked up from their playing days:
"They have to do enough to keep the players in good enough shape to go out there and perform, so that's to the degree they care. Once they don't have to deal with a player, once a player isn't on their roster...then they don't care. That's the relationship we have with the league. They're going to use us until our time is up and then they're going to find somebody else.
"
According to Chris Isidore of CNN.com, the NFL generated an estimated $13 billion in revenue last year, which broke the previous year's record of $12 billion.
Football is a grueling sport that tends to impact players long after their careers are over, and if Sherman's closing statements in the video are any indication, he hopes his involvement in the NFLPA will one day make life better for those who put their bodies on the line for the league.
