Justin Hunter to Bills: Latest Contract Details, Comments, Reaction
Wide receiver Justin Hunter was claimed off waivers by the Buffalo Bills on Friday after getting waived by the division-rival Miami Dolphins on Wednesday.
The Bills announced the roster move, which also included moving star wideout Sammy Watkins to injured reserve, on their official website.
Hunter, 25, spent his first three seasons with the Tennessee Titans after being selected in the second round by the team in the 2013 NFL draft. He accumulated 68 receptions for 1,116 yards and eight touchdowns in 35 games, never living up to lofty expectations.
He was cut by the team in the offseason, however, and signed with the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins claimed him shortly after, but he failed to make much of an impact with the team and was cut less than four weeks into his tenure with Miami.
He played in just one game for the team and didn't register a reception.
Still, Hunter stands at 6'4" and has shown glimpses of being a threat down the field in his career. He certainly has the look of a dangerous playmaker on the outside, though he's never quite translated that into consistent production on the field.
Now he may be quickly thrust into an impact role for the Bills. They have dealt with a rash of injuries on both sides of the ball, none bigger than Watkins' lingering foot problems. It's left the offense without a go-to receiver for quarterback Tyrod Taylor.
Robert Woods will serve as the top target, though he's better served as a No. 2 or No. 3 option. Hunter could fight his way into a starting role once he gets up to speed with the offense. His competition for that spot is the likes of Marquise Goodwin and Greg Salas.
The Bills will be hoping Hunter can finally live up to expectations. If he doesn't make an impact with Buffalo, however, Hunter may find future opportunities few and far between.
