Jerry Jones Comments on Ezekiel Elliott's Fumble Issues for Cowboys
While plenty of running backs around the NFL have lost playing time due to fumble problems, that does not appear likely to happen to Dallas Cowboys rookie Ezekiel Elliott.
When asked whether Elliott's two fumbles in Week 2 would lead to reduced carries going forward, team owner Jerry Jones responded in no uncertain terms: "No. They will not, at all," he said in an interview on 105.3 The Fan (h/t Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News).
"He’s a big man and he carries it properly," Jones added. "He does a good job of finishing, which means he’s trying to give the tacklers more than he’s getting in terms of how you absorb hits. All of that makes him a sound ball carrier fumbling wise."
The No. 4 overall draft pick rushed for 83 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries in a Week 2 victory over the Washington Redskins. However, he also fumbled the ball twice, losing one in the second half that led to a go-ahead field goal.
When asked about his performance after the game, those two mistakes were his main focus.
"It really doesn’t matter what I did," Elliott said, per Drew Davison of the Star-Telegram. "I had those two fumbles, and that’s what was important."
Elliott became a first-round pick after an outstanding career at Ohio State where he rushed for over 1,800 yards in each of his last two seasons. He also only had two lost fumbles last season and one the year before, according to Fox Sports.
In two games with the Cowboys, Elliott has 134 rushing yards on 3.3 yards per carry with two touchdowns. Dane Brugler of CBS Sports questioned the running back's start to the year:
Dallas will hope the first-round pick will get it together in Week 3 against the Chicago Bears, or else backup Alfred Morris might be in line for more carries going forward.
