Hillman Visits With Chargers
Tuesday, Sept. 20
According to ESPN's Adam Caplan, the San Diego Chargers brought Hillman in for a visit after Danny Woodhead suffered a season-ending ACL tear.
Caplan didn't specify when the visit occurred, so it could have come before the Chargers agreed to terms with former Tennessee Titans and Kansas City Chiefs running back Dexter McCluster on Tuesday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Hillman has been searching for work ever since he was labeled the odd man out in a Broncos backfield that features C.J. Anderson and Devontae Booker, but head coach Gary Kubiak noted that the "really responded" during the latter stages of training camp, per the Denver Post's Cameron Wolfe.
A year after he rushed for 863 yards and seven touchdowns while making 11 starts, Hillman explained he would be willing to contribute on special teams in order to find a home.
"I have to be a teammate and a player and show guys that you have to go out and do certain things to make teams," he said, per Wolfe. If that’s what I have to do, that’s what I have to do. You just have to roll with the punches. It’s a crazy league."
But despite his willingness to be a team player, it's difficult to envision the Chargers having a role left for Hillman to fill with Melvin Gordon entrenched as San Diego's lead back and McCluster penciled in as Woodhead's replacement.
