Fitzgerald Becomes 10th Player to Reach 100 Receiving Touchdowns
Arizona Cardinals wideout Larry Fitzgerald became just the 10th receiver in NFL history to reach 100 career receiving touchdowns during Sunday's game against the New England Patriots, per ESPN Stats & Info.
The veteran drew one touchdown closer in the second quarter of the contest, hauling in a three-yard pass from Carson Palmer for the 99th of his career. The touchdown also moved the Cardinals to within three of New England at 10-7.
His second touchdown of the night came in the final stanza of Sunday's tilt, a one-yard pass from Palmer that put the Cardinals ahead 21-20 with 9:46 remaining in the game. The Cardinals were unable to hold the lead and wound up losing 23-21 on a missed field goal in the closing seconds of the game.
While Fitzgerald is certainly old in terms of NFL players (33), he recently shrugged off a report from NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport that suggested 2016 would be his final season in the NFL. He backed that up with a strong performance in Week 1, catching eight of the 10 passes thrown his way for 81 yards and the two touchdowns mentioned earlier.
While the Cardinals haven't won a Super Bowl during Fitz's tenure, he and the team have come within a minute of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. Arizona enters 2016 as one of the favorites to challenge for the Super Bowl and fell just short in Week 1 against a New England team that figures to be in the mix as well.
Given his 1,026 receptions, 13,447 receiving yards and 100 receiving touchdowns over the course of his career, it's nearly impossible to argue against Fitzgerald being inducted into the Hall of Fame. While there's already a chance he'll make it on the first ballot, a Super Bowl championship in 2016 would certainly help his cause.
