DuPont Mayor Cancels Seahawks Rally Due to Potential National Anthem Protest

Mike ChiariSep 9, 2016

In response to the Seattle Seahawks' plans for a demonstration during the national anthem prior to their Week 1 clash with the Miami Dolphins, the mayor of DuPont, Washington, announced the cancellation of a rally for the team.

As Mike Baker of the Seattle Times tweeted, Mayor Mike Courts said the third annual Seahawks rally scheduled for Sept. 10 will not take place due to the risk of alienating or offending residents:

Wide receiver Doug Baldwin, who has voiced support for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick's anthem protests, revealed Thursday the Seahawks are planning a teamwide course of action during the playing of "The Star-Spangled Banner" on Sunday:

Among those who have joined Kaepernick in sitting or kneeling during the anthem thus far are 49ers safety Eric Reid, Seahawks cornerback Jeremy Lane and Denver Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall.

It's unclear what type of demonstration the Seahawks intend to take part in, but former Seahawks long snapper and United States Army member Nate Boyer is aware of it and approves:

Following Kaepernick's first anthem protest, the quarterback revealed to Steve Wyche of NFL Media that he did it in support of those he believes are oppressed in the United States: "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football, and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."

Kaepernick's protest has been a divisive issue both inside and outside football circles as many athletes, celebrities and activists land on either side of the fence.

It is unclear if the Seahawks are planning to go down the same path as Kaepernick, but the DuPont mayor's decision to withdraw support suggests there is concern about what the team will do on the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
