Breaking Down Most Intriguing Week 1 Picks
New England Patriots at Arizona Cardinals (-7)
The Jimmy Garoppolo experiment will finally get going as Tom Brady begins his four-game Deflategate suspension.
While the New England Patriots' first four games aren't the most taxing, they are playing an Arizona Cardinals team that was just one win away from representing the NFC in Super Bowl 50.
More importantly, this team holds one of the most dangerous passing offenses in the league.
Last season, veteran quarterback Carson Palmer led Arizona to 4,616 yards in the air, second only behind the New Orleans Saints thanks to a lethal trio of receivers in Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Floyd and John Brown.
With all three of those targets returning, Fox Sports' Peter Schrager made some bold predictions for Palmer and his teammates on NFL Network's Good Morning Football:
If they can pick up where they left off last year, the Cardinals will force Garoppolo to throw the ball and throw it often.
Against a Cardinals secondary headlined by Patrick Peterson and Tyrann Mathieu, New England's interim starter could find himself in some trouble if his team falls behind early.
New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys (Even)
Heading into the season as the favorites to win the NFC East, the Dallas Cowboys were dealt an enormous blow when veteran quarterback Tony Romo went down with a back injury during Week 3 of the preseason against the Seattle Seahawks.
Now they must rely on a pair of rookies to carry the offense in quarterback Dak Prescott and running back Ezekiel Elliott. Their first test will come against a reloaded New York Giants defense that boasts defensive linemen Olivier Vernon, Damon Harrison and cornerback Janoris Jenkins.
After a 2015 season that saw the Giants piece together the worst defense in the league, they will be keen to get off on the right foot against the inexperienced Elliott and Prescott.
And one of those new signings, Vernon, sees big things in his defense's future, per MSG Networks:
Even if the defense doesn't live up to Vernon's high standards, USA Today's Art Stapleton forecasts good things for the Giants:
But if the preseason is any indication of what will happen come Week 1, the Giants defense will have its hands full with Prescott after the clinic he put on during his exhibition outings.
Prescott completed 39 of a possible 50 passes for 454 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions.
With an elite receiver such as Dez Bryant and a dependable tight end in Jason Witten lining up next to him, the rookie quarterback must rely heavily on their experience in order to get the passing attack going—especially against a Giants passing defense that allowed 4,783 yards in 2015.
If Prescott performs even half as well as he did in the preseason come Week 1, the Cowboys are going to be in great shape in an NFC East that is expected to be up for grabs. If the Giants are able to get to him and force a turnover or two, however, New York could leave AT&T Stadium feeling like early divisional favorites.
