Jahri Evans Reportedly Signs 1-Year Contract with New Orleans Saints
Veteran offensive lineman Jahri Evans was in search of a team with the NFL season set to begin this week, and he ended up reuniting with the New Orleans Saints.
Adam Caplan of ESPN reported Evans and the Saints agreed on a one-year contract, citing a source. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network previously reported the Saints were "expected to sign" Evans to fill an empty roster spot.
Evans visited with the team on Tuesday, and afterward, head coach Sean Payton told reporters there was a "realistic possibility" the team would sign Evans.
The Saints released the 33-year-old Evans in February in an effort to get under the salary cap.
Per ESPN.com's Mike Triplett, they saved $3.1 million against the cap by cutting Evans, who was set to make $4.9 million in 2016.
After generating little interest from teams over the summer, Evans was given a shot when the Seattle Seahawks signed him in August. It seemed like a good fit because the Seahawks had offensive line issues last season. However, they cut Evans as part of the roster crunch to get down to 53 players before the Sept. 3 deadline.
No team knows Evans better than the Saints. He played his entire 10-year career with the team after being selected in the fourth round of the 2006 draft, starting 153 out of a possible 160 games before New Orleans released him earlier this year.
Andrus Peat, a first-round pick in 2015, is listed as the starting right guard on the Saints' official depth chart. Evans' familiarity with the Saints offense and quarterback Drew Brees allows him to step right back into the fold without having to learn the scheme.
