Fantasy Football Week 8: Weekly Fantasy Trends Report
Week 8 of the NFL and fantasy football season should be interesting, to say the least.
Not only do we have a game in London once again this week that is actually somewhat intriguing for the first time since the concept was devised, but six teams are on a bye.
Due to this, there could be some hard decisions made on the waiver wire simply because your team has too many guys with the same bye. For me, Weeks 9 and 10 are not going to be pleasant, but at least I have one more week of salvation.
Anyway, in this Trends Report, we'll cover some of the most highly added and dropped players, as well as examine the trade market for one player in particular who is likely giving you fits this season. In addition, there are a couple of running backs worth stashing for down the stretch, so we'll look at that as well.
Let's kick this off with the top add of the week—Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams.
Packers WR Davante Adams Lead Pickup
1 of 9
After a 13-catch performance for well over 100 yards and two touchdowns, it's easy to understand why Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams was the lead waiver-wire pickup on Yahoo this week, seeing a 35 percent ownership increase.
In Week 8, the Packers will be on the road against the Atlanta Falcons.
According to Odds Shark, this game has the highest total on the slate, coming in at 52.5, with the Packers' implied team total of 25.
Given the state of the Packers offense, it's not unrealistic to expect Adams to continue to get looks, especially in a game we should expect to be a shootout featuring two secondaries that are—for the lack of a better term—not good.
During a week in which nearly 20 percent of the league is on a bye, you could do a lot worse than Adams.
Redskins RB Chris Thompson Highly Added
2 of 9
Waiver-wire pickups such as Washington Redskins running back Chris Thompson reconfirm that the general public does in fact pay attention to the news.
Earlier this week, Liz Clarke of the Washington Post reported that fellow Redskins running back Matt Jones could potentially lose touches because of his fumbling issues.
While he wasn't eradicated entirely from the game plan following his fumble in Week 7, Thompson still out-carried Jones, 12-11.
Not only is Thompson the best pass-catching back on the team, but the Redskins probably trust him a bit more than undrafted rookie Rob Kelley.
Jets D/ST Top Add Amid Browns Matchup
3 of 9
Is it bad that I'm still kind of nervous about the New York Jets defense on the road against the probably Kevin Hogan-led Cleveland Browns?
If Hogan does start, note that he was far from a prolific passer in his NFL debut in Week 7, completing 50 percent of his passes for 100 yards and two interceptions. Yeah, he ran the ball well, but that was likely an anomaly.
The Browns look like they'll be without wide receiver Corey Coleman for another week, so the only real pass-catchers we're worried about are wide receiver Terrelle Pryor and tight end Gary Barnidge.
While they are fine options—and the running game for the Browns is actually competent—the Jets defense should be a plus streaming option in season-long leagues.
For DFS, consider looking elsewhere—a lot of people will be on the Jets, and who knows what will happen considering the Jets defense hasn't been great all season. But hey, if Hogan starts, I won't fault you for giving it a shot.
This is probably not the slam dunk we're perceiving it to be, but you could definitely do a lot worse in Week 8.
The Legend of Colts TE Jack Doyle Grows
4 of 9
Averaging nearly five targets per game and coming off a 10-target Week 7 contest, the legend that is Indianapolis Colts tight end Jack Doyle is growing stronger and stronger with each week.
Now owned in over 50 percent of Yahoo leagues, Doyle has caught a touchdown in back-to-back weeks, and he caught nine passes for 78 yards in Week 7.
This week, the Colts will be hosting the Kansas City Chiefs—the game with the second-highest game total, according to Odds Shark. However, the Chiefs give up the seventh-fewest fantasy points to opposing tight ends and have allowed just one touchdown to the position all season.
Granted, these are the Colts who are led by quarterback Andrew Luck, so things could be a bit different.
No matter, Doyle is clearly being targeted. With that said, there are a lot of nuances to Doyle's value this week, such as the potential returns of fellow skill-position players in wide receivers Donte Moncrief and Phillip Dorsett.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, it's looking pretty good for Moncrief and Dorsett to return, so that could hinder Doyle's upside.
If you're looking for a bargain tight end, look at C.J. Fiedorowicz of the Houston Texans over Doyle.
Chargers TE Hunter Henry Being Dropped at High Rate
5 of 9
This move was actually somewhat surprising to me.
In Yahoo leagues, San Diego Chargers tight end Hunter Henry comes in with the highest amount of drops among tight ends this week.
Week 7 was a disaster for Henry, who was targeted just two times. Yeah, he suffered a concussion, but to just drop him outright is kind of silly.
Henry still out-snapped fellow tight end Antonio Gates in Week 7 and put up over 80 receiving yards and a touchdown against the Denver Broncos just a couple of weeks ago.
If you're shallow at tight end or don't have the roster space and you're concerned Henry will miss this week, I sort of understand the move, but I'm not going to agree with dropping him just because he was out-targeted in one week.
Hold on to Henry, folks. It's rare we see a rookie tight end produce.
Jaguars WR Allen Robinson Most Traded Player
6 of 9
Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Allen Robinson has been a frustrating asset to own this year in fantasy. Because of this, he's being traded the most out of any other player leading up to Week 8, according to Yahoo.
The Jaguars were a team that, coming into the year, had a ton of promise and were even dark horses to some to win the AFC South.
Hey, it wasn't crazy to think that three months ago.
Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles has been dreadful this season, and as a result, A-Rob has yet to reach 75 yards receiving in a single game and has eclipsed 60 yards receiving in just one game. Robinson is just the WR42 in points-per-reception leagues.
Yikes.
If you can trade him, do it at this point. Not just A-Rob, but all your Jaguars shares.
During the playoff weeks for most players' fantasy leagues, Robinson will do battle with the Minnesota Vikings, Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans in Weeks 14-16, respectively.
Those are some tough, tough matchups.
See what you can get for Robinson now—before it is too late.
Patriots RB Dion Lewis Returns to Practice; Time to Stash
7 of 9
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, New England Patriots running back Dion Lewis will return to practice this week.
You know what that means: It's time to stash him.
We saw how effective he was in 2015, but 2016 is obviously a bit different.
How so? The presence of fellow running back James White. So far, White is playing great football, especially with quarterback Tom Brady back.
Lewis' role is definitely unclear, but if you're in a deeper league, he's worth a pickup. There's likely not a lot out there on many deep-league waiver wires, so make Lewis a priority. It could pay dividends later.
Packers RB James Starks Worth Stashing
8 of 9
Yes, he'll be out a few more weeks, but you need to stash Green Bay Packers running back James Starks.
Owned in just 7 percent of Yahoo leagues, Starks is set to be the Packers' lead back when he returns from injury. Yeah, fellow teammate (what the heck is he?) Ty Montgomery has been playing well in the running back-like role, but he can't handle huge workloads from the backfield every week.
During Eddie Lacy's absence last season, Starks filled in nicely, finishing as the RB24 in weeks Lacy was absent. Like New England Patriots running back Dion Lewis, if you're in a deeper league, Starks will provide, at a minimum, nice running back depth as we get deeper into the season.
Again, he's owned in only 7 percent of Yahoo leagues.
Broncos RB Devontae Booker a Must-Add with Anderson out
9 of 9
According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, Denver Broncos running back C.J. Anderson is set to miss a few games due to a knee injury.
Fellow running back Devontae Booker was already eating into Anderson's workload before the injury, but now Booker is a must-own in all formats.
If Booker plays well over these next few weeks, don't expect the team to give the reins back to Anderson completely.
Booker has a real chance to separate himself from Anderson. We know he is extremely talented, and he'll have a chance to showcase his abilities in an every-down role against the San Diego Chargers at home.
Expect 20 or more fantasy points in this one from Booker.
