Fantasy Football Week 5: Wednesday's Daily Fantasy Market Report

Richard JanvrinOct 5, 2016

This was perhaps one of the slowest fantasy football news days in recent memory.

There isn't a ton here fellas, so bear with me, will you?

A lot of the news is updates on injuries, which are of course important, but nothing we didn't already expect.

However, there was an important transaction that clarified a certain team's plans at a certain position.

Enjoy these updates and continue to look for Market Reports throughout the week leading up to Week 5.

Dolphins RB Arian Foster DNP Tuesday

1 of 7

It's starting to look like Miami Dolphins running back Arian Foster may not play once again in Week 5 due to his groin injury.

According to Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald, Foster was not at practice on Tuesday. Since his injury back in Week 2, Foster has not practiced.

There are still quite a few days left in the week to see if Foster can get up to speed. But given his age and history of soft tissue injuries, the Dolphins may find it best to sit Foster down and rely on fellow running backs Jay Ajayi and company.

The Dolphins will host the Tennessee Titans and their stingy defense this week. I'm not targeting any of these running backs in DFS for the upcoming action.

Ravens Cut RB Justin Forsett

2 of 7

After he was a healthy scratch in Week 4 against the Oakland Raiders, the Baltimore Ravens have parted ways with veteran running back Justin Forsett, according to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun.

The move is not surprising, especially with the impending debut of rookie running back Kenneth Dixon, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

The Ravens backfield is now comprised of Dixon, Terrance West and Javorius Allen.

With Forsett out of the picture, the value for each has gone up slightly.

In Week 5, the Ravens will take on the Washington Redskins—one of the three worst teams against opposing running backs in fantasy.

Although it's Dixon's debut, the back to target here is West—he should carry the load.

Cardinals HC Bruce Arians Less Confident QB Carson Palmer Will Play?

3 of 7

After Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer suffered a concussion in the team's Week 4 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians expressed optimism about Palmer suiting up for the Week 5 Thursday Night Football showdown against the San Francisco 49ers.

Well, it appears that confidence could be withering.

According to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area, Arians said there's "a chance" that Palmer could pass the concussion protocol.

You be the judge here: Is going from optimistic to saying there's "a chance" a decline in confidence?

Either way, this is a long shot given the short week and quick turnaround.

Expect backup quarterback Drew Stanton to take the reins here.

The Cardinals receivers are substantially downgraded with Stanton under center.

Cowboys WR Dez Bryant May Play?

4 of 7

According to Drew Davison of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Dallas Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones "wouldn't rule out" wide receiver Dez Bryant for Week 5 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Given that Bryant's injury is a hairline fracture in his knee, it may not be wise to play the wideout this week.

Either way, Bryant is not the same dominating player without quarterback Tony Romo on the field.

Over the last two seasons, Bryant has just two 100-plus-yard games, although his 2015 season was riddled with injuries.

If Bryant suits up, I'm not a fan of him this week in DFS.

Buccaneers RB Doug Martin DNP Tuesday

5 of 7

As mentioned in yesterday's Market Report, it's unlikely that Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin will return from his groin injury in Week 5. He's more likely to suit up after the team's Week 6 bye.

According to Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times, Martin did not practice Tuesday, further evidence that Martin will indeed sit.

Going up against the Carolina Panthers in Week 5 and with fellow running back Charles Sims dealing with some injuries, I'm staying away from the entire Buccaneers backfield.

Sims is coming off a 17-touch, 35-yard performance—I'm not confident at all in him going up against the Panthers. He's in for a tall task.

Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski's Hamstring Still Not Right

6 of 7

Through the first quarter of the season, New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski has missed two games and played in two. However, he has just one catch to start the 2016 campaign.

After suffering a hamstring injury before the season and sitting out the first two games, Gronkowski has been primarily used as a blocker. It was thought that Gronkowski's extra blocking duty was to assist in pass protection for third-string quarterback Jacoby Brissett, but it could be that and more.

According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the hamstring has "not come along like [the Patriots] thought it would."

Well that's not good.

Gronkowski has barely run any routes this season, but again, that could have been to help protect Brissett.

With quarterback Tom Brady returning after his four-game suspension, we could see Gronkowski used more in the passing attack.

Week 5 will be about as good a test as we'll see with the Patriots taking on the Cleveland Browns.

If Gronkowski continues to be utilized as a blocker instead of a pass-catching option for the greatest quarterback to ever play the game, we might need to start getting concerned.

It's impossible to not target Gronkowski in DFS, but if you fade him, I wouldn't blame you.

No More Committee in Dolphins Backfield

7 of 7

With the absence of running back Arian Foster, the Miami Dolphins decided to go with a committee of running backs consisting of Jay Ajayi, Kenyan Drake and Damien Williams to fill the void.

Well, that didn't work.

Some good news, though: According to Barry Jackson of the Miami HeraldDolphins head coach Adam Gase has acknowledged that the committee concept was a bad idea, saying it was, "some bad coaching by me."

In Week 5, the Dolphins will be taking on the Tennessee Titans—a team that allows the third-fewest fantasy points to opposing running backs.

If Gase truly scraps the committee, Ajayi will likely be the back to see the most work. So, based on volume alone, Ajayi makes for an interesting GPP play.
