Fantasy Football Week 17: Matt Camp's Week 17 Big Board
Playing for a fantasy football championship in Week 17 of the NFL regular season comes with plenty of pitfalls.
The teams out of contention have no reason to take any risks, which is why players like Tyler Eifert, T.J. Yeldon and Carlos Hyde have all been placed on the injured reserve. Why risk injured players in meaningless games?
While those moves give us clear answers on players’ statuses, decisions on playing time for players on teams that are locked into a playoff seed can be less clear. As I covered in my look at motivations for playing in Week 17, the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers and Houston Texans cannot help or hurt their playoff seeding.
You’ll have to monitor any comments from coaches, players and teams to get a feel for who will and who won’t play in Week 17. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin already said, “There are several guys that I will look hard at preserving and protecting as we get into the playoff round with the understanding we are the three seed.” (via Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)
For now, I classified any key players on teams locked into seeds as avoids, including Ben Roethlisberger, Le’Veon Bell and Antonio Brown of the Steelers.
Here’s my first look at the points-per-reception (PPR) rankings for Week 17. These will change throughout the week and up to Sunday’s action as we get more information about injuries and limitations, so make sure to bookmark this page.
Top 100
1 of 7
I present my top 100 players (minus quarterbacks) for the week as a way to help determine your flex spots. You may favor a certain position or player over another based on his role and/or your scoring rules.
As an additional tiebreaker, here are the teams I like as a whole this week based on their matchups:
- Green Bay Packers (at Detroit Lions)
- Atlanta Falcons (vs. New Orleans Saints)
- New England Patriots (at Miami Dolphins)
- New Orleans Saints (at Atlanta Falcons)

Concerns
Andrew Luck, IND (vs. JAC)
Last week, Luck threw for 288 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions and ran for an additional 12 yards with a rushing touchdown in a loss to the Oakland Raiders. The Indianapolis Colts are out of contention and don’t get an easy matchup in the season finale when they host the Jacksonville Jaguars. Over the last four weeks, Jacksonville held quarterbacks to the seventh-fewest fantasy points. Back in Week 4, the Jaguars limited Luck to 234 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
According to Mike Chappell of Indysportscentral.com, when head coach Chuck Pagano was asked about benching players, he said, “We’ll play our guys to win the football game.” It should be noted that Luck was on the initial Week 16 injury report with shoulder and thumb injuries, but he was eventually removed.
Week 17 Projection: 265-275 passing yards, 2 touchdowns, 1 interception, 14 rushing yards
Avoid
These players are part of teams with no motivation to risk any of their key players, so they shouldn’t be in your Week 17 lineup because they’ll likely play limited snaps or none at all.
Ben Roethlisberger, PIT (vs. CLE)
Dak Prescott, DAL (at PHI)
Eli Manning, NYG (at WAS)
Sleepers
Sam Bradford, MIN (vs. CHI)
Over the last three games, Bradford has 965 yards, four touchdowns and one interception, but that wasn’t enough to keep the Minnesota Vikings alive in the NFC playoff picture. If he gets similar volume in this week’s matchup with the Chicago Bears, you can consider Bradford a decent reach play. The Bears have been an average defense against fantasy quarterbacks in the last four weeks.
Week 17 Projection: 255-265 passing yards, 2 touchdowns

Running Backs
3 of 7
Better than Usual
Jacquizz Rodgers, TB (vs. CAR)
Rodgers has been the best running back for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers all season, but no one expected him to lead the way in Week 16 against the New Orleans Saints. When the team made Doug Martin a healthy scratch, Rodgers ended up leading the way with 15 carries for 64 rushing yards and a touchdown in addition to a pair of receptions for 15 yards on 61 percent of the snaps.
According to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, Martin will be inactive once again when the Buccaneers host the Carolina Panthers, meaning Rodgers should lead the way for the second straight week. In the last four weeks, Carolina allowed the 13th-most fantasy points to running backs. Back in Week 5, Rodgers got the Panthers for 101 yards on 30 carries and added five receptions for 28 yards.
Week 17 Projection: 16 carries, 65 rushing yards, 2 receptions, 19 receiving yards
Concerns
Rob Kelley, WAS (vs. NYG)
According to John Keim of ESPN.com, head coach Jay Gruden said Kelley is “day to day with a sore knee.” Despite an MRI revealing “no damage,” Kelley “probably won’t do much in practice.” Kelley had 19 carries for 76 yards and caught two of three targets for six yards in a Week 16 victory over the Chicago Bears.
The Washington Redskins have to beat the New York Giants to get into the playoffs, so Kelley has plenty of reason to play, but you’ll have to monitor his status in practice.
Week 17 Projection: To be determined based on Kelley’s injury status
Avoid
These players are part of teams with no motivation to risk any of their key players, so they shouldn’t be in your Week 17 lineup because they’ll likely play limited snaps or none at all.
Ezekiel Elliott, DAL (at PHI)
Le’Veon Bell, PIT (vs. CLE)
Lamar Miller, HOU (at TEN)
Sleepers
Alex Collins, SEA (at SF)
The Seattle Seahawks could look to Collins after yet another injury in their backfield. Thomas Rawls bruised his shoulder in Week 16 and head coach Pete Carroll doesn’t know about Rawls’ availability for Week 17, according to Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times.
With Rawls’ status in question, the Seahawks may start Collins in a great matchup with the San Francisco 49ers. They’ve been the second-worst defense against fantasy running backs over the last month. Collins had seven carries for 28 yards and four receptions for 19 yards in relief of Rawls in Week 16 against the Arizona Cardinals. If Rawls is out, Collins has a chance to be a top-15 running back this week.
Week 17 Projection: To be determined based on Rawls’ status

Wide Receivers
4 of 7
Better than Usual
Steve Smith, BAL (at CIN)
Sunday’s matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals could be the final game of Smith’s career, and while the Baltimore Ravens are out of playoff contention, Smith has plenty of motivation to finish the season on a high note. In Baltimore’s Week 16 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Smith caught all seven of his targets for 79 yards and a touchdown.
The Bengals might be the second-best defense against wide receivers in the last four weeks, but considering they have nothing to play for, Smith’s motivation outweighs any other factor in this game. According to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, head coach John Harbaugh admitted this week will be a “big deal” for Smith since it could be his last outing. He should be very busy on Sunday.
Week 17 Projection: 7 receptions, 89 yards, 1 touchdown
Concerns
Sammy Watkins, BUF (at NYJ)
Watkins should be in the better category after posting seven receptions for 154 yards and a touchdown on 10 targets in a Week 16 loss to the Miami Dolphins. Watkins isn’t having any noticeable issues with his foot injury, and with the New York Jets on tap for the season finale, he should be primed for another big game.
Unfortunately, the Buffalo Bills are making a business decision at quarterback by benching Tyrod Taylor in favor of E.J. Manuel, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Manuel has thrown six passes this season and has a 58.8 completion percentage over his four-year career. Going from Taylor to Manuel is a big step down and a cause for concern when it comes to Watkins’ fantasy value.
Week 17 Projection: 6 receptions, 75 yards
Avoid
These players are part of teams with no motivation to risk any of their key players, so they shouldn’t be in your Week 17 lineup because they’ll likely play limited snaps or none at all.

Tight Ends
5 of 7
Better than Usual
Martellus Bennett, NE (at MIA)
Bennett hasn’t been a consistent fantasy performer, but that’s been more about his ever-changing role in the New England Patriots offense. When featured, he’s performed well. Unfortunately, he has at least five targets just twice in the last seven games. That could change in this week’s matchup with the Miami Dolphins.
In the last four games, tight ends have scored the third-most points against the Dolphins. Last week, Bennett caught both of his targets for 19 yards and a touchdown. He has touchdowns in two of the last three games. Based on the matchup, Bennett could play a bigger role in Week 17.
Week 17 Projection: 5 receptions, 55 yards, 1 touchdown
Concerns
Jordan Reed, WAS (vs. NYG)
Reed’s shoulder issue has been a problem for the last month. He missed two of the last four games, including last week against the Chicago Bears. He has just two receptions for 16 yards on two targets over the same span.
According to Jason La Canfora of CBS, Reed will return for Week 17 against the New York Giants and play through the pain. His status should be monitored to determine how much he’ll play. He hasn’t played more than 30 percent of the snaps in his last two games.
Week 17 Projection: To be determined based on Reed’s injury status.
Avoid
These players are part of teams with no motivation to risk any of their key players, so they shouldn’t be in your Week 17 lineup because they’ll likely play limited snaps or none at all.

Best Options Based on Matchups
Seattle Seahawks (at SF)
While the Seahawks stumbled in their loss to the Arizona Cardinals last week, they should bounce back at San Francisco with a chance at a first-round bye on the line. The 49ers are tied for the ninth-most fantasy points allowed to defenses in the last four weeks thanks to 14 sacks, one interception, two fumble recoveries, one touchdown and just 58 points scored. With Carlos Hyde (knee) on the injured reserve, the 49ers will be without their best player.
Week 17 Projection: 3 sacks, 1 interception, 1 fumble recovery, 10-13 points allowed
Arizona Cardinals (at LA)
No team allowed more fantasy points to opposing defenses over the last four weeks than the Los Angeles Rams. During that span, they gave up 15 sacks, six interceptions, three fumble recoveries, two touchdowns and scored just 48 points. While Arizona’s defense had struggles in recent weeks, they should take advantage of such a great matchup.
Week 17 Projection: 3 sacks, 1 interception, 12-15 points allowed

Best Options Widely Available on the Waiver Wire
Wil Lutz, NO
Lutz is worth a look in the season finale against the Atlanta Falcons because of how well he’s kicked in the last five games. During that time, he’s made 10 straight field goals and all 16 extra-point attempts. The New Orleans Saints and Falcons could wind up in a high-scoring affair, which means Lutz will have a productive finish to his season.
