Fred Taylor Comments on Undisclosed Injuries Suffered During NFL Career

Tim DanielsAug 31, 2016

Former NFL running back Fred Taylor stated Wednesday that recent medical tests showed he suffered a series of previously unknown injuries during his career, which team doctors never revealed to him.

Taylor, who played for the Jacksonville Jaguars and New England Patriots across a 13-year pro career, explained the situation through a series of posts on his official Twitter account. He noted the examination came after lingering issues with his shoulders:

"

Visited Chicago last week for full [orthopedic] exam. Took 11 MRIs and 12 X-rays. Got results yesterday. Somehow I played career with fractured clavicle, 2 partially torn labrum, one in each shoulder. I'm Appalled! I was never told this as a player. Oversight? Or BS!

I've always gotten a sensation [in] my shoulders but I [thought] it was fatigue. All these years have [passed] and now I discover my shoulders [jacked].

He added: "Even through all the injuries and the lingering injuries, somehow the league still managed to deny my 'Line of Duty' benefit three times."

The NFL Alumni Association's official site provides the following details about Line of Duty benefits: "A former player may be entitled to a Line of Duty ('LOD') disability payment if that player incurs a 'substantial disablement arising out of NFL football activities.'"

Taylor arrived in the NFL with a lot of hype as the ninth overall pick by the Jaguars in the 1998 draft. The University of Florida standout captured three SEC championships with the Gators while showcasing dynamic playmaking ability.

He never reached expectations at the pro level, though. While he did crack the 1,000-yard mark seven times, he earned just one Pro Bowl nod (2007) and always seemed to be held back by nagging injuries. He played in all 16 regular-season games just twice in his career.

Now it sounds like the injury problems were more serious than originally thought. And it took Taylor, who Eric Edholm of Yahoo Sports noted continues to work for the Jaguars as an analyst, five years after his career officially ended to discover the severity of the ailments.
