Austin Davis to Broncos: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction
The Denver Broncos added some quarterback depth on Saturday when they signed Austin Davis to a one-year deal, per Aric DiLalla of DenverBroncos.com.
Broncos executive vice president of football operations and general manager John Elway discussed the addition:
"He's coming in to learn the offense, we'll take it one step at a time. Let's put it that way. Any time you bring in a guy this late, it's gonna take some time to get him turned around. [Trevor Siemian's] the guy. We've got a lot of confidence in Trevor and believe that he can do the job. It's Trevor's job, and he's not going to be looking over his shoulder.
"
This comes after Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com first reported that the Cleveland Browns released Davis on Aug. 29. Cabot said Davis "became expendable when the Browns drafted Cody Kessler in the third round."
Davis has played 13 games during his career, 10 of which came during the 2014 season when he was a member of the St. Louis Rams. He saw extended action after starter Sam Bradford suffered an injury and took advantage of the opportunity with 2,001 passing yards and 12 touchdowns through the air.
However, he also threw nine interceptions, and he struggled with turnovers in 2015 as a member of the Browns with three picks to only one touchdown in three contests.
Davis added 547 passing yards for Cleveland in those three games but was unable to replicate some of the flashes of potential he showed in St. Louis. He threw for more than 300 yards and three touchdowns in back-to-back weeks against the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles in 2014 before faltering some in his last five starts that season.
Davis was a talented playmaker at the college level for Southern Mississippi. He threw for 3,496 yards and 30 touchdowns in 2011 and tallied 352 yards and four scores on the ground. It is unrealistic to expect that type of production moving forward in the NFL, but quarterbacks don't put up those types of numbers without some level of talent.
Denver likely won't rely on Davis as a season-saving presence under center, but he does provide the Broncos with some experience on the depth chart. He already threw for more than 2,000 yards in a season once in his career and is a solid emergency option if something were to happen to Siemian and rookie Paxton Lynch.
