NFL Waiver Wire 2016: Projecting Preseason Cuts Who Will Land with New Teams

Joe PantornoAug 26, 2016

As the 2016 NFL season approaches, rosters will begin shrinking down to the 53 players for Week 1. While many fringe players will see their professional journeys hit a road block of sorts, there is the possibility that some will catch on with another team for 2016.

Even though we've yet to reach the Aug. 30 deadline when NFL teams make their initial cuts from 90 players to 75, there are already some notable players teams have cut who will likely be signed with a different squad for this season.

Stevie Brown

Safety Stevie Brown hasn't played a down of regular-season football since 2014 as a member of the New York Giants.

After being cut by New York and the Houston Texans last season, Brown wasn't able to stick around with the Kansas City Chiefs, who cut him on Wednesday.

Seeing Brown failing to find a team willing to take a chance on him after the 2012 season would have been surprising after he led the Giants with eight interceptions and the league with 307 interception yards.

But a torn ACL before the 2013 season has derailed his career, and he hasn't recorded an interception since then.

Brown was still able to find some positives in sitting out for the entire 2015 season, per Joel Thorman of SB Nation: "Missing last year was kind of a blessing. It allowed me to get healthy and get everything right."

There hasn't been any recorded issues of the ACL acting up since then, but one would have to believe that it has played a part with his sudden decline in play.

At 29 years old, Brown could still have serviceable seasons in the NFL if he has a clean bill of health. Given how important and ever-changing things are in NFL secondaries, Brown should receive a call or two from teams that are in need of some help at the safety position.

Nate Washington

Veteran wide receiver Nate Washington didn't last with the New England Patriots for long. After joining them this offseason, the Pats cut the 32-year-old Wednesday as he attempted to catch on as the team's fifth wide receiver.

An illness held him out for a substantial amount of time, and he was unable to get any real time with Jimmy Garoppolo, who will be starting the first four games of the season while Tom Brady serves his Deflategate suspension.

Washington won't be team-less for too long given his consistency in the league.

Over the past 10 seasons, Washington missed just two games and recorded 600 or more receiving yards in eight of those years.

On a Houston Texans team that was mired in quarterback problems last year, Washington was the team's second-leading receiver with 47 catches for 658 yards.

He also led the team with an average of 14 yards per catch and was a major deep threat, as this video from the NFL's Twitter account showcases:

Given his success last year in a below-average offense and his consistency over his career, Washington is going to latch on somewhere to compete for a lower-receiver spot.

Karlos Williams

Karlos Williams went from a promising back in the Buffalo Bills' backfield after a solid rookie season to a free agent after a difficult offseason.

The 23-year-old power back arrived at Bills camp 20 pounds overweight and was also suspended four games for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

Due to the fact the Bills have Reggie Bush, Mike Gillislee and Jonathan Williams behind LeSean McCoy, the troubled Williams became expendable

As soon as he cleared waivers, though, he received interest from other teams. According to Sal Capaccio of Buffalo's WGR 550, Williams visited the New York Jets on Tuesday.

It apparently went well, as Williams came away raving about the organization, per WBNY Buffalo's Richard Cumpston Jr.:

ESPN.com's Rich Cimini was quick to point out, though, there is no deal in place and nothing is "imminent."

But given the kind of attention he's gotten so quickly after hitting the market, Williams should find a team for which he can start his road to redemption.
