Bears head coach John Fox told reporters Grasu has torn his ACL in his right knee and will be out for the season.
Grasu Once Again Sidelined with Injury
Grasu has dealt with injuries since the Bears drafted him in the third round last year. He missed eight games in 2015 because of a nagging neck injury.
On Aug. 1, he spoke with Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune about his plan heading into the 2016 season: "I had a lot of things to work on, get better at and grow from. But I feel like I'm playing faster because of my knowledge of the offense. I feel really good in my responsibilities."
With Grasu out, the Bears' depth along the offensive line will be called into question. According to Finley, either veteran Ted Larsen or rookie Cody Whitehair will likely step into the starting center role.
Heading into his seventh NFL season, Larsen, who usually plays guard, has started only 10 games at center. Whitehair, on the other hand, is a second-round pick who has yet to see game action at the professional level.
The Bears' chances of competing in the NFC North could be in trouble if the offensive line fails to jell before the regular season begins.
