Cowboys Reportedly Pass on McCown

Monday, Aug. 29

ESPN's Ed Werder reported on Aug. 4 that the Dallas Cowboys rejected a potential McCown trade because the Browns' asking price was too high. However, Werder noted that the Cowboys were still interested in the veteran signal-caller. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Monday that even though Tony Romo is injured, fans should not expect the Cowboys to initiate talks for McCown.

Rapoport reported before Werder that the Cowboys were expected to pursue McCown after failing to sign Nick Foles.

Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports confirmed that report at the time, adding the following:

According to Cabot, "The Browns, who are stockpiling draft picks, would be willing to deal McCown for the right price."

The Cowboys were already searching for a backup quarterback after Kellen Moore suffered a broken right fibula. According to Cabot, the candidates at the time included McCown, Michael Vick, Mike Glennon and Josh Freeman.

Werder also reported that the Cowboys could seek to trade for Tampa Bay's Glennon.

The Cowboys are expected to start rookie quarterbacks Dak Prescott.

The Cowboys were 1-11 without Romo in the starting lineup last season, so securing a solid backup is essential for the organization.

Jackson Comments on McCown's Status

Thursday, Aug. 4

Per Daryl Ruiter of 92.3 The Fan, Browns head coach Hue Jackson told reporters in regard to McCown, "In the end we're going to be respectful towards the player but in the end will do what's best for us."

"There’s nothing to it as far as we’re concerned. I feel good that he’s here," added Jackson, per Cabot
