Alec NathanJul 6, 2016

Former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Jeff Webb was arrested on "multiple felony counts" after allegedly staging four car crashes to secure insurance money, the California Department of Insurance announced Wednesday.

The release states Webb allegedly worked with eight co-conspirators to stage crashes that involved intentional wrecks as the result of contact with poles and curbs.

All told, Webb was allegedly involved in four staged crashes that led him and his co-conspirators to file $70,000 in fraudulent claims. The California Department of Insurance also reported there could have been losses up to $139,000.

"California is ground zero for staged auto collisions," California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones said, per the release. "Organized crime rings are responsible for the majority of staged collisions, which are costly to insurers and consumers. The multi-agency Urban Grant Task Force is one of our most effective weapons in eradicating these crimes."

A three-year NFL veteran, Webb suited up for the Chiefs from 2006 to 2008 after the team drafted him in the sixth round out of San Diego State. In limited playing time, he tallied 36 catches for 382 yards and a touchdown during his professional career.
