Johnson Placed on IR

Tuesday, Oct. 4

The Cardinals announced they placed Johnson on injured reserve and signed running back Kerwynn Williams to replace him.

Latest on Johnson's Practice Status

Monday, Oct. 3

Johnson did not participate in Monday's session, per Cardinals reporter Darren Urban.

Cards Have the Depth to Overcome Johnson's Setback

Johnson re-signed with the Cards this past offseason to continue his one-two punch with David Johnson, but he has been inconsistent thus far with 95 rushing yards through four games. He had six carries for 34 yards before exiting in Week 4.

After a down year with the New York Jets in 2014 that saw the former 2,000-yard rusher gain just 663 yards on the ground, it was starting to look as though CJ2K had reached the end of the line.

Arizona gave him an opportunity with Andre Ellington hurt early in the 2015 season, though, and it paid big dividends for Bruce Arians' team.

Johnson rushed for 814 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games before a fractured tibia cost him the remainder of the campaign.

The three-time Pro Bowler is now 31, which is an age when many running backs begin to break down, and those questions will undoubtedly begin to creep up regarding Johnson now that he is ailing once again.

While Johnson provides Arizona with great backfield depth, potentially losing him for a period of time isn't likely to sink its talented, dynamic offense.

David Johnson should be the bell-cow back for as long as Johnson is on the shelf, and the likes of Ellington and Stepfan Taylor provide some quality skills behind him.

Johnson brings a great deal of experience and veteran savvy to the table, though, which is something that can't be replaced by any other running back on the roster.

Johnson's absence will take a dimension away from Arizona's running game, which becomes an even bigger issue with quarterback Carson Palmer out against the 49ers on Thursday in Week 5. Ā
