Brandon Marshall Cleared of Wrongdoing in Civil Suit over 2012 Incident

New York Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall was cleared of wrongdoing in a civil lawsuit Friday stemming from a 2012 incident in which he was accused of punching a woman.

According to the Associated Press, Christin Myles lost her suit against Marshall when the jury in New York decided she hadn't proved the superstar wideout struck her outside a Manhattan nightclub.

Per Seth Walder of the New York Daily News, a juror explained the reasoning behind the verdict:

Walder also reported that Marshall's lawyers will file a motion to recoup the legal costs incurred due to the suit.

According to the Associated Press, Myles said she knew Marshall punched her because she saw his tattooed forearm, but the video that was used for evidence reportedly showed Marshall wearing sleeves at the time of the incident.

Per ESPN.com, Marshall's friend and former NFL wide receiver, Mike Sims-Walker, said in deposition testimony read at trial Wednesday that neither he nor Marshall punched any women.

"We were defending ourselves," Sims-Walker said in the deposition testimony. "We did nothing to nobody. We were totally victims in this case. I don't understand why we're even here."

The 32-year-old Marshall enjoyed one of his best NFL seasons in 2015, as he caught 109 passes for 1,502 yards and a career-high 14 touchdowns in his first campaign with the Jets.

The six-time Pro Bowler is set to enter his 11th NFL season after previous stints with the Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins and Chicago Bears.

Although New York's quarterback situation is currently unsettled with Ryan Fitzpatrick still on the free-agent market, Marshall promises to be a key part of the team's push to the playoffs after missing out in 2015.

Marshall is among the NFL's elite receivers, and with the civil case no longer hanging over his head, he will have the luxury of focusing solely on football in 2016.
