Sandoval Wants to Stay in Boston Under Certain Conditions
Thursday, April 14
Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan, citing major league sources, reported "Sandoval wants to stay in Boston only if he can play every day, and the Red Sox have no intention of playing him unless he loses weight and others in their current lineup struggle."
Padres Potentially Interested in Acquiring Sandoval
Friday, April 1
Jon Heyman of MLB Network reported the San Diego Padres have discussed Sandoval internally, but their level of interest isn't known.
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reported on March 28 the Padres have had a scout in Florida "taking a close look at Pablo Sandoval, post-back injury."
Cafardo added that it's unclear if there's more to the story, however.
Nonetheless, there is a link between the Padres and Sandoval, as the team tried to sign the third baseman in 2014. San Diego is "open to trading veteran starter James Shields," per Cafardo, and the Red Sox have been linked to Shields, along with the Baltimore Orioles.
Sandoval Failing to Meet Expectations with Red Sox
Sandoval, 29, struggled in 2015, hitting .245 with 10 home runs and 47 RBI. He's now Shaw's backup, and a super expensive one at that—he signed a five-year, $95 million contract prior to last season.
