Mets' Yoenis Cespedes Gives Up on Ball Under Wall, Results in Inside-the-Park HR

Kyle NewportMar 24, 2016

Major League Baseball outfielders, especially in the National League, have apparently been taught to abandon all logic and throw their hands up when they believe a ball is no longer playable.

This happens from time to time at Wrigley Field because of the ivy. When there are no leafy obstructions, however, the situation is not as common because the ball has to be lodged in/under the wall for an umpire to rule the play dead.

In the top of the second inning of Thursday's spring training game between the New York Mets and Houston Astros, Astros designated hitter A.J. Reed hit a shot to the wall. The ball landed in the perfect spot and settled directly underneath the wall and on the warning track.

Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes took that to mean the ball was stuck. It wasn't.

An umpire made his way to the wall to let Cespedes know the play was still live. When the center fielder attempted to plead his case, the umpire bent over and just smacked the ball out from underneath the wall.

Meanwhile, Reed just kept running. The result: an inside-the-park home run.

Fortunately for Cespedes, the pitcher on the mound, Matt Harvey, wasn't fighting for a roster spot. No need for the pitcher to worry too much about his spring training stats in this instance.
