Chiefs Hoping To Keep DeVito In The Fold

Saturday, Feb. 27

Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star reported the Chiefs expressed their desire to re-sign DeVito. The state of current negotiations is unclear, however.

DeVito registered 19 combined tackles and three sacks in 13 games as part of Kansas City's defensive line rotation last season. The three sacks more than doubled his previous career total of 2.5 entering the 2015 campaign.

Herbie Teope of Chiefs Digest passed along comments from the veteran about his past three seasons with the Chiefs, and he had nothing but positive things to say:

"

I love Coach (Andy) Reid. John Dorsey, he's the best general manager in the NFL. I tell you, just as a friend I like to talk to him—he's a great guy.

I love the organization over there, I love the coaching staff, I love the guys in that locker room, I believe in the mission, I believe in the philosophy, so that's an easy choice.

"

DeVito illustrated that loyalty last offseason by accepting a pay cut in order to give Kansas City more financial flexibility under the salary cap.

A potential reunion depends on money, as well. DeVito is a good fit for the team's defense, but he doesn't make a big enough impact to force the Chiefs to overpay. If he ends up leaving, they can fill the void through the draft or free agency without having to make a major investment.

DeVito, who previously played for the New York Jets, may end up testing the free-agent waters just to see what other opportunities may be available. But it wouldn't be a surprise to see him end up back in Kansas City on a team-friendly deal for the 2016 season.
