NFL Reportedly Tested PSI of Footballs Before, During and After Titans vs. Patriots

Joe PantornoDec 21, 2015

Deflategate isn't going away just yet. NFL Network's Lisa Kraus Edwards reported Sunday the league would weigh footballs before, during and after Sunday's game between the Tennessee Titans and New England Patriots.

It was the first time this season that footballs were tested at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, home of the Patriots and the origination point of the Deflategate scandal that gripped the NFL during the offseason.

The NFL has a new policy for testing its game balls, which it detailed in August, per Mike Florio of NBC Sports' Pro Football Talk:

"

At designated games, selected at random, the game balls used in the first half will be collected by the [kicking ball coordinator] at halftime, and the League's Security Representative will escort the KBC with the footballs to the Officials' Locker Room. During halftime, each game ball for both teams will be inspected in the locker room by designated members of the officiating and security crews, and the PSI results will be measured and recorded. Once measured, those game balls will then be secured and removed from play. ... At the end of any randomly selected game, the [kicking ball coordinator] will return the footballs to the Officials' Locker Room where all game balls from each team will be inspected and the results will be recorded.

"

The NFL fined the Patriots $1 million and forced them to give up two draft picks after an investigation found quarterback Tom Brady was "at least generally aware" that New England staff illegally deflated footballs for last year's AFC Championship Game against the Indianapolis Colts, per ESPN.com's Mike Reiss

Brady was suspended for the first four regular-season games of this year, but a federal judge nullified the ban before the start of the season.

On Monday, WEEI.com's Larry Johnson had some fun at the NFL's expense:

For the 12-2 Patriots, no news after the league's tests is good news. Instead of worrying about the PSI of pigskins, fans can instead focus on the fact that Brady and New England are again an AFC contender despite having a receiving corps depleted by injuries.
