Game of the Week

Carolina Panthers at New York Giants

1 p.m. ET, Fox, Fox Sports Go

It's an amazing feat in itself to make it to 13-0, but with three games to go in the 2015 regular season, the Carolina Panthers are on the cusp of history.

But before they make it to 14 straight, they have to go to New Jersey and take on a New York Giants team that has gained the reputation of giant slayers over the past two decades.

In 1998, a 5-8 Giants team took on and defeated the 13-0 Denver Broncos at the Meadowlands 20-16. Nine years later, after losing to Tom Brady and company in Week 17 to cap off a perfect regular season, the Giants defeated the 18-0 New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

The 1934 Giants also defeated the 13-0 Chicago Bears in the 1934 NFL Championship Game, which became known as the "Sneakers Game." But not much motivation could be taken out of a game played 81 years ago.

This is a different Giants team, though; a team that hasn't exhibited much magic in a 2015 season where they are 6-7 and somehow tied for first for the lead in the NFC East.

Their offense isn't the problem. Eli Manning is coming off his finest game of the season, a 27-of-31 performance for 337 yards and four touchdowns, two of them to the mercurial Odell Beckham Jr., who continues to make his case week in and week out as to why he should be considered the best receiver in the game.

In Week 14 against the Dolphins, it was this amazing toe-drag touchdown reception:

Beckham and Manning will have quite a test playing against cornerback Josh Norman, who has been eager, to say the least, to cover the young Giants receiver, via Jonathan Jones of the Charlotte Observer:

However, the Panthers secondary has been banged up as of late, with Charles Tillman listed as probable after missing the last four games and having lost Bene Benwikere for the season with a leg fracture. It forced the team to go out and sign free agents Cortland Finnegan and Robert McClain this month.

This means that the Giants might be looking elsewhere other than Beckham if they want to find passing success through the air.

It's the Giants defense that will have a problem on Sunday, taking on a confident Cam Newton and one of the league's best rushing attacks. The problem is the Panthers will be without their leading rusher Jonathan Stewart after he sprained his foot.

In his absence, Fozzy Whittaker will take over in the backfield, but this is just an open invitation for Newton to show off his arm. Even if he is without his leading receiver, tight end Greg Olsen.

The Giants pass rush has been nonexistent this season, ranking 31st in the league with 16 sacks. Newton, who can buy all the time in the world with his legs, won't have to use them much as he can just stand in the pocket and pick apart the Giants inept pass defense.

Which of course will lead to more of this:

New York ranks last in the league with over 308 yards allowed through the air per game.

Maybe in a prior season, the Giants would have been able to shut down the Panthers, but the key to a win is defense and Big Blue just doesn't have it this year.

Prediction: Panthers defeat Giants 33-21
