Hoyer Undergoes Surgery, Goes on IR

Monday, Oct. 24

Bears head coach John Fox told reporters Hoyer underwent surgery, and the Bears later placed him on injured reserve, via Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times.

Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com reported earlier on Monday that Hoyer's surgery went well and that he's now expected back in six weeks.

ESPN's Adam Caplan reported on Sunday that Hoyer would undergo surgery. Caplan added that Hoyer would miss at least eight weeks and could be placed on injured reserve.

Hoyer Injury Dooms Bears' QB Depth

Chicago could now face time without its top two quarterbacks, as Jay Cutler is still nursing a thumb injury.

This is just the latest injury for Hoyer, who suffered concussions last season as the on-again, off-again starter for the Houston Texans.

Through five games this season as Chicago's impromptu starter entering Thursday night, Hoyer had been reliable, recording 1,396 passing yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions while completing 68.8 percent of his passes.

Hoyer signed with the Bears in May after the Texans acquired Brock Osweiler to be their quarterback of the future. Hoyer's presence ensured the Bears had another quarterback with NFL starting experience when Cutler went down.

As a result of Hoyer's effective play, head coach John Fox hinted on Oct. 3 that he could remain the starter after Cutler returns, per Chris Emma of CBS Chicago:

Last season, Hoyer led the Texans, who started the season 1-4, to a 9-7 finish for the AFC South title. His ability to avoid turnovers, with seven interceptions to 19 touchdowns, helped the Texans pull out wins in close games.

Matt Barkley stepped in for Chicago upon Hoyer's departure in Week 7. Barkley hadn't appeared in a regular-season game since 2014 with the Philadelphia Eagles, who selected him in the fourth round of the 2013 draft.
