Daily Fantasy Football November 17: DFS Stock Up, Stock Down

Chris RolingNov 17, 2015

Daily fantasy football stock fluctuations continue to both confound and win owners contests, depending on how one interprets the movements.

Last week, those who bought into the idea of say, Green Bay Packers wideout Randall Cobb against the Detroit Lions suffered as he totaled 10 points. Those who bought into the idea of Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins, though, turned out the big winners as he went for 31.96 points.

Similar dilemmas and lineup-changing movements face owners going into Week 11. To better weather the storm, here's a look at some of the notable movers for November 17 and what it means moving forward.

Stock Up: LeGarrette Blount, RB, New England Patriots ($5,000)

LeGarrette Blount is now the surefire starter in New England.
LeGarrette Blount is now the surefire starter in New England.

Owners brave enough to gamble on the notion that LeGarrette Blount would take things over for the New England Patriots with Dion Lewis out of the frame scored a solid 15.7 points last week.

The Patriots gave Blount 19 carries compared to one apiece for James White and Brandon Bolden and he also received two targets through the air as the every-down back. He also had a second touchdown called back.

Long story short, Blount now has 15 or more points in two consecutive games and three straight games with at least 17 carries. He's going to function as the workhorse, which means his touchdown streak should extend to three with the Buffalo Bills in town in Week 11.

It's hard to throw faith in New England running backs most years, but this time out has been different. Blount's up next as the man capitalizing on New England's steadier approach.

Stock Down: Lamar Miller, RB, Miami Dolphins ($6,200)

Lamar Miller has the threat of a committee lingering over his stock.
Lamar Miller has the threat of a committee lingering over his stock.

It might be time to cool the hype when it comes to Miami Dolphins running back Lamar Miller.

Miller scored 21.3 or more points in each of his last two contests, but his price just jumped an iffy $800 after a weekend in which one Jay Ajayi stole six carries from him in the backfield, turning the chances into 48 yards on an eight yards per carry average.

While Miller isn't in danger of losing his starting gig per se, the last thing owners want to do is trot out Miller in a committee look. In that same contest, he mustered just 16 carries for 43 yards (2.7 average) and did his damage with six catches for 50 yards and a score through the air.

These are daily leagues and the chances Ajayi gets hot and the coaching staff rides the hot hand for a game aren't unreasonable. The sudden chance at another back hawking snaps and perhaps even touchdowns in all facets has Miller's stock on a slight decline.

Stay tuned.

Stock Up: Clive Walford, TE, Oakland Raiders ($2,500)

Clive Walford continues to see his usage skyrocket in Oakland.
Clive Walford continues to see his usage skyrocket in Oakland.

The price above suggests Oakland Raiders tight end Clive Walford isn't anyone to consider, but his rising stock says otherwise.

Walford has 7.1 or more points in three of his last four outings. It's not massive production, but it's a sign the offense continues to work more his way as he develops.

In fact, Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle even said Walford would be a bigger part of the game plan moving forward. It's a notion that has held true considering Walford now has three scores over his last four games.

The more Walford produces, the more the offense will look his way. A Week 11 encounter with the sloppy Detroit Lions hints at a breakout game for the rookie, so at this price owners would be wise to pull the trigger.

Stock Down: Peyton Manning, QB, Denver Broncos ($5,900)

Peyton Manning's injury has his stock on the decline.
Peyton Manning's injury has his stock on the decline.

Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning has gone from a must-start QB1 to a nice sleeper with upside at a reasonable price to a must-avoid option in the matter of weeks.

Manning mustered 17.24 points or less over his past three outings prior to Week 10 while his price range hung around the mid-$6,000 mark.

Now he's below $6,000 after getting benched last weekend. To make matters even worse, there's a chance he misses time with an injury, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport: "The focus for #Broncos is on getting Peyton Manning healthy, which may take him missing Sunday and potentially more. Expect Brock Osweiler."

ESPN.com's Jeff Legwold followed with a report that Manning will sit out at least one week.

In theory, the Broncos could give Manning time off to get as close to 100 percent and he'd be a nice sleeper pick. For now, though, his stock's about to bottom out and owners on the hunt for value have to look somewhere else.

Stock Up: Charcandrick West, RB, Kansas City Chiefs ($4.500)

5 of 7
West is a must-start option at this price.
West is a must-start option at this price.

For one reason or another, Charcandrick West of the Kansas City Chiefs continues to fly under the radar as a top running back option, both in the minds of fantasy owners and when it comes to pricing.

West is on absolute fire since taking over for the injured Jamaal Charles, having scored in each of his last three outings and posted at least 22.2 points in each.

Josh Moore of 4for4 Football provided some context: "Since taking over starting job in W6, only Miller, Gurley, K Williams & Freeman have averaged more points per game than Charcandrick West."

At this price, it's impossible to ignore West, who next gets one of the league's worst run defenses when he squares off with the San Diego Chargers. After torching a strong Denver defense for 31.1 points, his stock couldn't be higher.

Stock Down: Jordan Matthews, WR, Philadelphia Eagles ($6,000)

6 of 7
Jordan Matthews continues to strugle with his role and drops.
Jordan Matthews continues to strugle with his role and drops.

Remember Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jordan Matthews?

Matthews exploded for 31.3 points in Week 9, finally reaching the potential so many owners thought he could on a week-to-week basis.

Then he posted 5.1 this past weekend on three catches.

Look, Matthews is a talent with drop issues and an iffy quarterback situation just made worse by the fact starter Sam Bradford just suffered an injury that could hold him out of multiple games, according to Rapoport.

Matthews is almost impossible to project and even an upcoming matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers looks like a no-fly zone. At this price, owners can find much more reliable options such as Eric Decker ($5,800) and Michael Crabtree ($6,000), to name a few.

Stock Up: Danny Amendola, WR, New England Patriots ($4,000)

7 of 7
Danny Amendola is the next man up for New England.
Danny Amendola is the next man up for New England.

It's Danny Amendola time for the Patriots with the news that starting wideout Julian Edelman needs to have surgery on an injured foot, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Amendola already had 17.9 or more points in three of his last five outings as a reliable target for Tom Brady, but those numbers could skyrocket with Edelman on the sidelines.

Brady won't stop throwing the ball because he's down a wideout and if somebody is going to take a large chunk of Edelman's production, it will be Amendola. Given that receptions count for points on DraftKings, Amendola has the potential to be a top scorer each week.

It helps, of course, that the Patriots head into a matchup with Buffalo, a team they know well. Amendola shouldn't have any problems posting gaudy numbers on a high quantity of receptions alone.
